Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Record locked error

I was in the middle of updating a form when my screen went completely blank and my PC rebooted itself. Now when I go to edit a record in the table associated with the form I get an error message "Record locked by another session or user". I am the only user.
How can I extricate myself from this problem?

    RE: Record locked error

Whoops. I seem to have plenty of other tables locked too because I get the same error "Record locked by another session or user" when I try and update other tables. Help!

      RE: Record locked error

You said that you PC rebooted. I would do that again to make sure you get a clean shutdown and restart. Then open the database and do a database compact from the File menu. Now open the default form for one of your tables and see if you can start data entry.

To add to what Bill has said, when you shutdown, wait about 1 minute before you restart. I have learned very much the hard way that many systems do not actually completely shut down immediately, although all activity seems to stop.

          RE: Record locked error

Thanks Bill/Jerry. I closed down my PC for several hours (mostly for my benefit), rebooted, compacted the database, as you suggested. This seems to have helped. However I am still left with an imbedded default browse in one form that will not work. Any field I try to change, or add new record to the table to which the form is asociated, gives me the same error: "Record locked by another session or user". Because the browse is not in my list of browses, I have tried to change and re-save the form's imbedded browse, which I can do quite readily with no errors. But again when I try and change any data field in the imbedded browse on the form I get the same "record locked" error. Oh, and the error message is from Alpha Five, not from Windows. Perhaps, on restarting, A5 is a little too enthusiastic about locking users out when the PC just dies in the middle of something. Any suggestions? For example is there a utility or something I can run to unlock everything: tables, forms, browses, reports, etc. or anything that is stored in an A5 database that A5 can lock?

            RE: Record locked error

I have some new information that may help to resolve the "record locked" problem. When the problem occurs I can go to the table itself (the one the form in question is based on) and enter data directly into the fields. I do not get the "record locked" error when I do this. I can then go back to the form and enter 2 or 3 more records without error. Then it just starts again. I get the "record locked" problem. So I then go back to the table, enter another record, which clears the error. So then I go back to the form, enter a few more records and then I get the error all over again. And then I ..., well I think you get the picture.
Really wierd behaviour. How can I get rid of the confounded error, forever ... ?

              RE: Record locked error

Corrupted indexes sometimes lead to inappropriate locked record messages.

                William,
Thanks for the suggestion. I immediately raced back into my application, packed it and re-indexed every table. Unfortunately it has made no difference. I still get the "record locked" problem. It's the main table in my database too. So I'm totally stymied at the moment until I can sort this out.
