Default Opening *.dbf files from Windows

    Hi,

This may be a really dumb question, but why can't I open a dbf file (for example, one of the Sample files that comes with A5V5) by clicking on it from Windows. Alpha 5 then executes and attempts to open it, but says that it is an invalid file format. However, if I open Alpha 5 first, then navigate to that particular dbf file, I have no trouble opening it.

    Thanks,
    Robin

the alpha five document is the .adb file.

the association that exists in the registry is between the alpha5.exe program and the .adb file.

so, you can double click on an .adb file and a5 will open it.

you cannot double click on a .dbf file and have a5 open it directly.

you can (as a shortcut that we built into a5) say file/open and then select a .dbf file, but behind the scenes, a5 creates a new .adb file for that .dbf file.

    Selwyn,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I knew there had to be a reason.

I copy the .DBF file outside the A5 directory then double clicking it opens in Excel.
