Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Tutorial on new Action in Action Scripting

    Action Scripting Tutorial

Action Scripting Tutorial -- Prompting for multiple values
Quite a few users have asked if it is possible to display a dialog box that
allows users to select multiple value, and then print a report for the selected
values. For example, a dialog box might show a list box of cities. The user
would choose Boston, New York and London in the multi-select list box, and the
report would print for those cities.
A while ago I posted a sample Xdialog script that showed how this could be
    done.
Now, the Xdialog Genie in Action Scripting automates the process of writing
this dialog box. The linked document shows you how you can use this new Action
    in our own applications.

Tutorial works great. Thanks Selwyn. How do I get the Report to print in the correct columns? I have tried to edit the report layout but cant get it right. Screenshot of what I get.

            RE: Action Scripting Error Message

I thought that I carefully followed the directions step by step, yet I get an error message every time I click on the form button.

See the attached jpg. If you cannot read it, the message says,

            [Script:xdialog_generator Line:544 p[] not found.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

                RE: Action Scripting Error Message

Thanks Selwyn, updating to version 1342 did the trick.

I almost never used Action Scripting in Ver 4.x, but with the intro of XDialog and all of the nifty, sophisticated features of Action Scripting in ver 5, I am definitely hooked. This is Ultra Cool stuff !!!

RE: Tutorial on new Action in Action Scripting

Using the tutorial, I am able to build a multiple, multi-value promt for reports. This may be the single neatest thing in Alpha 5! I would love to be able to do the same thing with a query.

                  The tutorial says"

"You could also have selected the Archive, Print, Send or Save actions in the Reports category, or the Run a Saved Operation action in the Operations category."

Since one of the options in "Run a Saved Operation" is "Query", I used this to try the same techniques as shown in the tutorial. I get an error message in line 1. Can Action Scripting be used to perform this funtion? If so, an addendum would be greatly appreciated. While I can build and save a query, I'm not sure how the query should be constucted so that it can be used by "Run a Saved Operation" in Action Scriping and multi list. This may be my problem.

RE: Tutorial on new Action in Action Scripting

First, as one of the major proponents (pain in the butts) of the multi-select thing......

"may be the single neatest thing in Alpha 5! "

As William Shatner said "I told you this thing would be big!!"

I agree with needing this on saved queries!!

John, since a new patch has come out since this thread, I went back to see if the Multislect issue would work on queries now.

Either I couldn't figure it out (a real possibility) or it's not there. Have you tried it since the patch?

I don't think it made the cut. If if it did, I have not been able to figure it out. In another post, Selwyn stated that they plan on converting all the c dialogs to xdialog, so I would expect that we will see even more consistency and this functionality should be available throughout.

Selwyn, a couple patches have come out since then, and I don't see this. Can we now use this for Queries?
