Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Web App Server ideas

With the Beta available, the natural question is, "How can we use this?"

I'd like your ideas, so I could include them in the next newsletter. Here are some I've come up with:

Family Tree - You could put a data-entry form on the Internet so your relatives could enter their family information. The data they entered would go directly into your database, and would be immediately available to anyone else in the family.

Charity Auction - You could have volunteers solicit donations from local merchants, and enter them as they receive them. This would help eliminate calling on the same merchant twice, and make compiling the information much easier.

Survey - Get opinions from club members or other groups, and display the "real time" results.

Team Scores - Have the referee or coaches submit the scores of each game. Then the standings could be calculated and displayed for everyone.

Appointments - Show times available, and allow others to reserve a time slot. Once they did, that spot would no longer be available.

Rentals - Display the products you rent (videos, tools, etc.), and show the ones that are currently available.

Memberships - Keep club information up-to-date, and allow new members to submit membership applications.

That's quite a list Bill and I think they are great examples of how the Web Application Server can be used. They are all applications that will greatly benefit from the ability to have users enter, view and manipulate data from just about anywhere. Without the Web Application Server, you'd probably have to purchase the runtime and distribute it to all the family members, volunteers, coaches, members, etc and then figure out a way to merge all the data.

I'd like to add two more applications to your list:

Company Intranet - Allow travelling sales staff to enter and review orders from remote locations such as a customer's office or their hotel room.

Online Store - List the products for sale on your company's public web site with the ability to place an order.

These are relatively simple yet still powerful. We will be adding these to Alpha Sports as examples and writing a tutorial to go along with them. We think these will be a good foundation for developers to build upon. With some effort, they could be relatively easily transformed into robust applications that would be a huge competitive advantage to companies using them.

I believe that Alpha Five Web Application Server has tremendous potential. This is an almost unbelievable opportunity for the Alpha community. The real issue is, what CAN'T be done with A5WAS. I have long thought that many of us would be better served if we would pursue our own creative ideas, rather than implement others in Alpha Five applications. The A5WAS will allow the Alpha Five user to have the WWW as a store front.

An area that could be well served would be charitable organizations. Both the online tracking and dissemination of information.

        Jim,

How about an online bookstore that could serve any number of colleges? A poor man's Amazon.com, if you will.

How about putting this User Group on WAS? What a great way to demonstrate its performance and functionality on a daily basis.

Actully Brad, we plan to. The server isn't quite up for it yet, but when it is, we'll be moving this message board onto the WAS.
