Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    About the vertical scroll bar

I have noticed that when you use to zip database tool on the menu the vertical scroll bar works like a charm. (Actually like it should in Windows) In all my browses it does not work properly. My question is, since supposedly all the menu items are written in xbasic why does it work for the zip addin but not in my browses?

RE: About the vertical scroll bar

That is a complaint of Neil Terry as well. This issue has been around since at least version 4. It would be great if Alpha would address this issue becasue when trying to find a record in a browse with a lot of records , it's very unhandy trying to guess where to stop.

      Russ,

Allow me to stick my neck out. The zip tool is probably writted in xbasic/xdialog. Browses, according to Selwyn, are the oldest code in Alpha - to be replaced w. new code - in the next major release? That's why.

Thats great Pete, except that based on past experience the next major release might be a looooong wait.

IMHO, it would be worth paying for an upgrade to the browses and controlpanel - say ver. 5.5.

I agree, the question is when? I also haven't bought the runtime yet, pending my app development and more stability but I sure wouldn't want to pay another $1600 for the upgrade RT

RE: About the vertical scroll bar

we are working on significant improvements in browse for the next version of a5.

this will include control over an astonishing number of browse properties (such as bitmaps in titles).

it will include a lot of new browse events (such as onarrive, ondepart, etc) for individual cells.

it will inlcude a scroll bar that gives you exact control over scrolling.

it will inlcude logical record numbers, row numbering, "green banding" etc.

however, as they say, there is no free lunch. in order to have a scroll bar that gives you exact control over scrolling, you need to know the logical record number for each record in the current query. that adds overhead.

so, for example, if you open a 1,000,0000 record table in browse mode, and set the index to lastname, then hit ctrl-end, currently, a5 goes to the end IMMEDIATELY.

if you turn on the "advanced scroll bar" feature, then there will be a DELAY, as a5 computes each record's logical record number.

we expect that we will be able to release an early beta version of this improved browse in about a month.

the new browse will probably be marketed as part of "a5v5.5"

Any early estimates of release time frame?
