Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't go to design

I have a tabbed form. When I click on Form - Design it does nothing. I have to close it and click on design in the control panel to go to design. I remember seeing another post on this but can't find it. Anyone found a solution to this. It only happens on one (perhaps some) forms not all.

    RE: Can't go to design

    Russ,

I had a file sent to me recently when I opened it I was unable to get into the table in design mode. Even after I had created a form I could not get back to edit the formor the table. I was just about to send a bug report to Selwyn, so I decided to close Alpha and open it again and what do you know, the problem had gone. I recon it is one of those 150 Genies that Selwyn has put into Alpha, they do like to play their little tricks.

It doesn't matter how many times I open and close A5, it still works the same.

I have a form that has a 'close form' button on it and it won't let me go from form view to design either. There may be a connection.

I don't think there is a connection. I just created a form, placed a close button on it using action scripting, opened and closed the form a couple of times, and went from view to design mode without incident.

              Neil,

Are you saying the close button is the reason you can't go to design view? What lead you to this conclusion? What happens if you delete the Close button? Can you still toggle between form view and design view?

As far as I know, no button can be programed (other than perhaps with Xbasic)to go from form view to design view. Close buttons oly take you back from whence you came.

I want to send you this form without sending the whole app. How can I send just the form and necessary tables?
When I zip it it seems to either not have enough or everything.

                  Russ,

Look in the zip options where you can select what to send. Choose the table (or if a set tables) upon which the form is based as well as the support files for the table(s)and the the database files (a*.*).

                    Thanks Bill,
I've tried that 3 or 4 times and either I can't get it to run off the expanded zip or I have to backup the main app .alm etc. and then it always wants to point back to the working app tables etc. Frankly I am afraid to start deleting tables from here since it points back to working data, forms etc. The only way I can see is to copy the whole app to a new location and start stripping it, a large undertaking. I really don't have the time to spend a few hours trying to get clean data to send. At the same time this problem is annoying. I'll try to get some time tonight to play with it further but there oughta be an easier way.....

                      RE: Can't go to design

OK, I've had a few minutes to play with this. I can copy the whole database, which is quite large, and I suppose then start stripping things out. If I zip the tables, sets and the .adb, .alb, .alm, and .alx the dictionary files still point to the path of the entire app so I really can't strip stuff out here without screwing things up. I tried making a new database and adding the tables and sets that were copied to a dummy directory but then there are no toolbars etc. and I don't have this problem going into and out of design. Therefore I am assuming it is something corrupt on the form that is causing the problem. I am going to try cutting and pasting everything on the form to a new one to see if that helps. Will let you know.
