Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Subreports not printing in group footer

I have migrated a version 4.5 database to version 5 and found that my subreports are not printing at all when located in a group footer.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

why do you have subreports in a group footer, and not in the detail section?

Not sure why. But they worked great in version 4.5
Do you suggest I try to move them to the detail section?

I had the same problem with subreports in a group header. Thought that is where I had to put them to get the control over height etc. Selwyn asked the same question, moved them and they all work correctly. Just a new view on what I was doing. V4.5 allowed subreports in headers and footers, they don't work in v5

            James:

I wrote an article on Sub-Reports for the October edition of "The Alpha Newsletter". Unless I'm missing something, they are designed to go in the DETAIL section.

As I was reviewing some of the older topics on the discussion board, I came across a thread where you said something that caught my interest.

            You said,

"V4.5 allowed subreports in headers and footers, they don't work in v5'

I'm always eager to learn new tricks and/or alternate methods for accomplishing tasks. Can you please explain why you would place a Sub-Report in either a header or a footer?

            Thanks,
            Robert

I believe I ended up doing that because I was having problems putting them anywhere else. My report has 1 subreport in the detail section and 4 subreports in the group footer. Worked great in 4.5

Have you moved them from the group footer, where they were in Ver 4.5, to the detail section in Ver 5? And if you did, any noticeable improvements to the output of your report?

RE: Subreports not printing in group footer

It works great in the detail area. I know I must have put the subreports in the group footer area in version 4.5 for some reason. Anyway, works now.

RE: Subreports not printing in group footer

                    Robert,
I also think that I put the sub-report in the header because I needed to control the finished height of the report to get a series of smaller reports to print three up on a page. (Small petty cash receipts) I had convinced myself that putting them in the details would not allow that height control, that it was for multiple records. Alpha5 v4.5 reports allowed you to place sub-reports in the header or footer and they still worked. The reports worked and I went on to other tasks.
When V5 was released (I never tried this particular report on the beta) and I revised and moved all this application to v5, this report failed. I looked back at it and tried to figure out why it would not work, but mainly got hung up in the fact that it used to work and now it didn't.
I needed it to work, so I did what one does when they get stuck with this product, I checked the board and then e-mailed Selwyn. He looked at it and asked "Is there a reason the sub-report is in the header and not in the detail section?" I went back to the report, moved the subreport to the detail section and it all worked like it should. I finished that part of the app and all is well.
So...I placed it there because at the time it seemed logical and it worked. Now...I don't think it wants to be a new method or trick because, I have revisited my logic, AND V5 will not allow us to do it anyway.
Thanks for asking. I have been an Alpha user since A4v1 and check into this board almost daily. My problem is I always find at least six more things to try and learn, slows down my progress on what I should really be doing!!!

                    Regards,
                    Jim Engdahl
