Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Backup and Restore

I have a backup button with backup_database() as the only code and a restore button with addin.run("overlay_restore") as the only code on it. The restore button allows selection from any of the available drives (on my development system A, C, D, E, F). However, the backup button only allows A, C, D. As a point of reference, drive D is the zip drive, E is the CDRW and F is the CD drive.
Does anyone know why backup_database() only allows selection from A, C or d while addin.run("overlay_restore") recognizes all the available drives? More importantly, does anyone know how to allow the user to select from all available drives?

    Dave,

For some reason backup() excluded Cd drives .. Selwyn is aware and will be adding it to an upcomming patch.

I had a similar problem and that was his answer. Look for the thread titled "Backup settings revisited"

How are you able to run this backup from a button? Doesn't it give you a warning that there is a table open? (The table of the form that the button is called from)

          Mark,

The backup_database() command bring up a dialig box which has two tabs; the first (Backup) contains the backup options such as drive to back up to, whether you want the database compressed before making the backup, retain previous backups, etc.; the second tab (Files) lists all of the files in that particular database and by default they are all checked. You can uncheck any file or files that you want. I have a dummy table named MENU to which all my menus are connected. After I uncheck MENU.DBF, I can save the new settings. Then I click on the Backup tab, click the Backup button and get out of the way.

When I run the backup again, I can simply click the Load Settings button and the previous setting are loaded and I'm ready to crerate another backup.

I hope this gives you the information you need.

            RE: Backup and Restore

you should save a backup definition that does not include the table for which your menu form is defined.

then you can use the onestep_backup() function to run your saved backup definition.

Is it possible to pre-define these backup settings so when a user installs the application, these settings are already defined?

                Mark,

I THINK the answer is yes. I haven't tried it, so I'm not certain. The reason I think it would is that the commands are activated with onPush event of the button, and the button is a component of the form and the form goes with the database .....
