Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Add table/set - table not there.

I just discovered that my system doesn't always display all of the available tables in the Add table/set window. I'd like to find out if anyone else is having the issue described below in order to (hopefully) track down the cause. I'm particularly curious to know if it happens on any other operating systems.

When a table has both the read-only and the archive attributes both unchecked this table will not show up in the Add tables/sets window. However, these files are visible when I go a step further and click the drop-down box which is normally used to locate tables/sets in other folders.

I think this issue may be related to an issue I've been having with the filefind.get() function when the attributes are unchecked. The A5 team created a fixed for filefind.get() in the latest update - build 1330/1018 - but, although it now works correctly on Selwyn's systems, it still doesn't work correctly on my systems. (Selwyn often asks us to send him examples of problems - maybe I should ship him my whole system!)

Both computers I own exhibit this Add tables/sets problem but I checked two others and one has the problem while the other does not. All systems checked so far have been Win98 SE. I also updated to IE 6.0 because the system it worked correctly on was using 6.0 while I was still at 5.5 - it didn't help.

This attribute issue can easily happen when files are backed up or copied from a CD:
    - Backup routines should turn off the archive bit to indicate that it has been backed up. When the archive bit is turned on again, it tells an incremental backup that the file has been changed and should be backed up again.
    - And, if the read-only bit is turned off after copying from a CD, then all attributes will be off unless you manually turn the archive bit back on. (Or modify the file later which will also turn the archive bit back on.) So, if I copy a whole database from a CD to my computer, uncheck the read-only bit, then open the database and go to the Add tables/sets option, nothing is there - which is how I discovered the issue.

I have also tried various settings in the Windows Settings / Folder Options including turning them all off and turning them all on - no change.

Besides getting some feedback on how other operating systems are reacting to this, any thoughts on a solution would be appreciated.

    Cal,

The only time a table does not show in the add drop down list for me is if the table is set as hidden. Otherwise it does show. This is with WinMe.

      Hi Cal,

I am running the same OS as you with the same upgrade on A5 and see the very same thing as you. It's weird.

        Cal

I just checked it out in Win98 and you are right. If the file has neither archive or readonly checked, it isn't visible on the list. Since it works correctly in WinMe, could this be a Windows bug? Nah, Microsoft never has faults, right?

A thought does come to mind. If the Alpha code accesses a Microsoft supplied dll, the code may be based on a later version of the dll than used in Win98. A few years ago, I ran into to opposite, where a new dll would not work on an program written to use an older version. Microsoft claimed the new dll was just the same old code with a couple added features and anything wriiten to use the old dll would work just fine with the new one. Right. The software company had to post the old dll on their tech support site so the software (a CAD program) would work in newer Windows versions.

RE: Add table/set - table not there.

Interesting so far. I'd still like to hear from some NT, 2000, and XP users.

Interesting also that I have found at least one system locally that is Win98 SE and it doesn't exhibit this problem. Now if we could just figure out what's different.

Anyone with the original Win98? If none of those have an issue, maybe that would give us a hint?? (anyone have time to check 5000 or so files?)

I checked on Win 2000. No problems. Unchecked all attributes and still shows in the add dialog.
