Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Spaces in Tables

    I recently asked for help on a problem posting between two tables that I'd converted from Excel. I'd done this hundreds of times before without any problem. This time however the post didn't work and I thought the indexes were also not working.

    Selwyn solved the problem when he discovered that one of my tables had a space after the name which was causing the problems. Thought I'd share this as it might help others.

    Thanks again Selwyn.

    RE: Spaces in Tables

    actually, just to be clear. spaces in table names are ok. it was a trailing space that caused the problem.

    i.e. the table name was something like:

    c:\data\myfile .dbf

      RE: Spaces in Tables

      While I agree with Selwyn that it does work, XBasic users should be aware of the pitfalls. Here is a simple XBasic append to show what happens. (Yes, this simple example could easily be done with a saved operation, but I have run into situations where only an XBasic append could give me the versatility that I wanted.)

      The actual name of the transaction table is "Append Test" with a blank space and I am appending it to the "Donations" table. Note what happens in the script - sometime you use the blank space and sometimes you must replace it with an underscore. (For the past 2 years, I didn't even think it could be done because I kept trying to always use either an underscore or a blank whereas the correct method is a mix of both.)

      tp1 = table.open("Donations")

      append.t_db = a5.get_path() + "\append test.dbf"
      append.type = "All"
      append.m_key = ""
      append.t_key = ""
      append.m_filter = ""
      append.t_filter = ""
      append.m_count = 1
      append.m_field1 = "Member_nof"
      append.m_exp1 = "@append_test->Member_nof"
      append.t_count = 0
      tp1.append()

      Because of things like this, my personal rule is to never use blank spaces in names of tables, sets, scripts, functions, or layouts. Instead, I use an underscore.

      Avoiding blank spaces also makes it much easier to find specific items when using the A5 documenter. For example, here are some real world hits when looking for the "Sales Summary" report:

      ...c_cont = "Sales Summary Report for the Month ... (9 hits)
      ...title = "Sales Summary Report, Month Ending " + ... (2 hits)
      ...title = "Sales Summary Report, Year to Date fo... (3 hits)
      ...title = "Sales Summary Report" (1 hit)
      ...title = "Sales Summary Report, YTD for "+CYear... (2 hits)
      ...title = "Sales Summary Report, Month to Date f... (1 hit)
      and, of course:
      :Report.preview("Sales Summary") (3 hits)

      Lets see, 21 hits, 3 valid, batting avg. = 142. Back to the minors.

      (This hit ratio can be even worse for one-word names. The record so far is a form named "Show" which had 11 pages of hits but none were valid! Turns out the form was no longer used.)
