Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Auto Populate List Box

    Pg. 151 of the user guide states that you may auto populate a list box from tables or sets in the database.

    So far I've been able to access tables but NOT SETS. Have an app that requires info from multiple tables (in a set) to auto populate an x-dialog box displaying a list or record box. Based on the selection, a variable is filled, on which the app depends.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    RE: Auto Populate List Box

    you can't populate a list box with data from a set. it is not a built-in feature.

    however, if you use xbasic, you can compute the data that you want from the tables in your set and then use this data to populate your list box.

      Here is an example, of how you can populate a listbox with data from multiple
      tables.
      This example uses the Invoice_header table and the Customer table in
      AlphaSports.

      t =
      table.open("invoice_header")
      c = table.open("customer")
      ic = c.index_primary_put("Customer_I")
      relation.link_type = link_first
      relation.index_child = ic
      relation.order_parent = "customer_id"
      relation.ref_integrity = 0
      t.relation_add(c)

      query.filter = ".t."
      it = t.query_create()

      t.fetch_first()
      data = ""
      while .not. t.fetch_eof()
      data_i = t.Invoice_number + " | " + c.Lastname
      data = data + data_i + crlf()
      t.fetch_next()
      end while
      t.close()
      'don't need to close 'c' because when you close t it
      'automatically closes 'c' since the tables are linked
      selected = word(data,1,crlf())
      ui_dlg_box("Data from Invoice Header and Customer",""%dlg%
      [.100,20selected^#data];
      "10&OK!ok";
      %dlg%)

      ui_msg_box("user selected: " ,selected)

        Thanks Selwyn

        The code cleared up a couple questions about populating a list box that I couldn't grasp from the documentation. Sometimes the obvious is hard to see.

          actually, something that i forgot to point out is that an xdialog list box can display data from either an array, or from a crlf delimited string.

          in my example, i am using a crlf delimited string.

          had i wanted to use an array, i could have done this, after the "data" string had been created.

          count = w_count(data,crlf()) 'get number of lines in 'data'
          dim a_data[count] as c
          a_data.initialize(data)

          then, in the xdialog, i would have said:

          [.100,20selected^#a_data];

            Selwyn

            Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately I'm Xbasic impaired. I was really hoping that the manual was correct about being able to use sets. Any feature that limits one to tables only, defeats the purpose of properly normalized data.(My humble opinion).

            I also tried lookupc in a dialog & as a calculated field in the table. So far no luck as A5 demands a full path to the server, which limits transportability.

            Despite the above, am having a hoot discovering all the new features.

            Thanks, John

              RE: Auto Populate List Box

              You gotta love x-dialog & action scripting. It took a while, but here's the solution.

              Problem:
              Need to get to a table called "SYSTEM" by customer mnemonic.(ABCCOM) System file contains only customer # 1234.

              "CUSTOMER" file contains Customer # (1234) & Customer mnemonic (ABCCOM).

              Solution: On the menu screen (which contains a variable V_SYSNO, to control record selection) place a button with an on push event.

              1. Display X-Dialog Box
              Record List-Combo Box (or Record List-List)
              Table Customer
              New Variable Name "V_T_HSCUST"
              Define Record List CUSTNO (ABCCOM)
              Return Value to Variable = HSCUSTNO (1234)

              2. Display X-Dialog Box (List of all systems belonging to this customer)
              Record List-List Box
              Table Sysno
              Filter (HSCUSTNO = VAL(V_T_HSCUST) (1234)
              Variable name "V_SYSNO"
              Define Record List
              Hscustno, Sysno
              Return Value to variable "SYSNO"

              3. Refresh Display = Current Form (Displays selected system # on form)

              The above is only to be utilized by the X-Basic impaired (like me).

              John

              PS. Selwyn, thanks for the x-basic sample, have you possibly forgotten how powerful you made action scripting & X-dialog. (DIG, DIG)
              Hopefully they will antiquate X-Basic.

                Wouldn't it be great to attend an A5 conference next spring and spend a whole day creating with XDialog and Action Scripting? And go home with a CD of all the examples. A day of that would be well worth the cost of a 3 day conference.

                Richard, whatcha say??
