Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    privileges, backup's, 1 or 8?

    Hi all,

    I have 3 problems (sorry):

1: After someone deleted the whole database this morning I need to set up tewo users. 1 (me) to have access to everything - and 2, who can input and change data only and print reports etc. I need this so they can not change or delete anything they shouldn't be doing.

2: I need to make the database insist on backing itself up every x days.

3: I have an auto-increment field (5 numbers, increment by 1). On 4.5 it was fine, but on V5 when i search say 15678, it brings up 15671. It seems to be confusing the two numbers. I have no idea why, please help?

Thank you in advance for you help, I'm grateful that there are people here who understand all this!!

    Mark,

because the data tables must be accessible to the workstations (read / write access) it will always be possible for user to crank up Windows Explorer and delete the database files.

In my shop we have two rules:

    1) If you did not create the file, you do NOT have permission to delete it.

    2) If you're not sure whether you created the file, you do NOT have permission to delete it.

Also, daily backups are essential, coupled with periodic 'restores' to verify that the backup routine is working as you expect.

As far as #2 and #3:
      2) Under View, Settings, Database, you can set a requirement for database backup in v5. You can make the user backup the database every day, every week, or however often you feel is appropriate.
      3) Try rebuilding the indexes and see if the problem goes away. Also make sure no query is active on the table (press the "show all" icon)--a query may be preventing you from seeing the records that are missing from the query.

As for #1: at present, Alpha's security option is not fully developed. When it is developed you would be able to assign privileges to each user. Unfortunately, as Tom points out, a dedicated obstructionist can still use Windows to delete files, unless your network operating system prevents it. That's not something that Alpha can control.

        Thanks Peter and Tom,

Peter, when you say rebuild the indexes, what do you mean and how do I do it?

        Thanks,

        Mark

go to Control Panel tab, Tables/Sets

Highlight any table. From the Table menu, choose Update Indexes.

          or

Right-click on a table name and choose Update Indexes.

              Hi Tom,

I like your rules. Do people obey them?

My scheduling software runs on a Novell network. Our fine Novell administrator had me do experiments to discover exactly what rights a generic user of an A5 application requires. Users of the application get those rights and no more.

              They are:
              -read
              -write
-filescan (which is Novell speak for search for files, I think).

People in the application's user group get these rights. They can see the files in Windows explorer but cannot delete them as they do not have delete priviliges in that folder. However they can read and write to the files which in A5 terms means display and write records. In other words they can use the application normally.

Others not in the application's user group (defined in Novell) do not even see the files in explorer.

Novell is quite a tool. It provides a very fine-grained measure of control in a network environment.

                Hi Mark,

"BackUp MyPC" will do a terrific job of backing up your data. It has a built in scheduler that works thru Windows scheduler and will backup every hour if you want. Backing up to a CD-R/RW is a piece of cake with it.

                    Hi,

Thanks for everybodys help. I think I'm going to get a removable hard drive, backup once to the master drive, and then again on the removable to be sure.
