Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Unexpected Behavior of CTRL-V and CTRL-C

I have an application that has been through many versions and I have two issues that are confounding me

    Issue 1-

When manually pasting (via CTRL-V) into a field, the cursor ends up at the beginning of the data that was just pasted. Previous versions of Alpha left the cursor at the end of the pasted text (and therefore allowed for easy additional data entry. Ive worked with the cursor positions for entering a field, but that doesnt seem to help.

    Issue 2-

While in a particular form, pressing CTRL-C brings up a find dialog for a certain key.
I believe this is as a result of defining a short-cut key sequence for a button in a previous version.

Ive searched everywhere I can think of including the buttons that are intended to activate that particular find-by-key and cant get the shortcut sequence turned off.

    Any ideas where to look?

    John,

    1. Can't help with this one.
    2. pressing CTRL-C brings up a find dialog for a certain key. I believe this is as a result of defining a short-cut key sequence for a button in a previous version.

I assume you realize that Ctrl-C is a Windows short-cut for the 'Copy' command and there could possibly be a conflict?

Ive searched everywhere I can think of.......

We haven't a clue what's all included in 'everywhere'. That being the case, I'd determine the location in the previous version where you defined the short-cut and then check the same place in the version in which you're now working.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      John,

I have some thoughts on your problems.

First, with the having the cursor at the beginning of the pasted text. Have you tried setting the data entry field rules to place cursor "after unselected text" ??

With - Do you have any custom menus that possibly use this hotkey? Does the key combo work outside of A5?

      I hope that helps some.

The data entry field rule is already set to place cursor "after unselected text". It works fine if text is already there, but oddly enough, if you 'paste' something even after existing text, the cursor returns to the 'unselected' beginning of the pasted text.

I found the button that was giving me the CTRL-C headache.
(If button text has an "&" symbol, the following character will be defined as a hotkey) It's better now.

        Thanks for your input.

          Ken:

Re: CTRL-C - Yes I realize it is a conflict. It is the Copy command I want back. (see later post for solution I found)

          Thanks for trying though.

            Issue 2 is fixed...

            Can anybody replicate Issue 1?
(copy some text, and paste it into a text field... where does the cursor end up?)

              John

The cursor does behave as you indicate in issue1 in V5, which is different from earlier versions. I don't know if I would classify that as a bug or just different behavior. It really is more of a nuisance problem since it is easy to move the cursor. In fact, most users probably won't even notice. If it really causes a problem, go up to the FAQ's at the top of the forum page and send an email to Alpha using the adress provided. They normally are very prompt at responding.

                Thanks for the verification Jerry...

It does cause somewhat of a slowdown for us.
When we are keying a large amount of data, often there is repetitive information followed by unique information. Before we could just copy the first instance of the repetitive info, paste it in the new line then keep on typing.

The alpha folks also seem to monitor this list very well so I'm hoping they'll notice this post and take a look at the possibility of changing it back to a more helpful behavior.
