Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    User Options Questions

I am working on an application in Alpha 5V5, which other users will be using later and have some questions, which I need help with:

    Security
I set up the master password and users. However, whenever I go into run mode, there is no option on the Tools section of the Menu for any of the Security functions. How to I enable them in run mode so that my users can change passwords and maintain user and group lists and change the settings on encrypting data.

    Backup and Restore Databases
Same thing while I have access to all these options in design mode, they disappear in run mode. I found the command Backup_Database(), which does bring up the corresponding window. Is there a command to activate the Restore window as well?

    Modal and Modeless Data entry
I would like to give my users the ability to globally change the data entry style between modal and modeless. While I can provide this by letting the users have access to the View-Setting menu option, I normally would remove this option in a custom menu. Is there an X-Basic command to globally turn modal data entry on and off (rather than doing it individually on every form)?

    Print Options
When assigning a button to print a report, the only options are Print and Preview. The Print Genie inside A5, however, gives the additional options of E-Mail etc. Is there an easy way to provide all options to my users as well?

Any help on the above questions is appreciated.

    Regarding Security...

This is a feature which is not available yet. We will possibly release it at a later date as an addin, but right now you can only use the master password feature.

      RE: User Options Questions

What about the Backup and Restore options? And what about a global way to turn modeless / modal on and off?

        RE: User Options Questions

to let users change their own password, and to perform other operations on the list of users, (if you did not want to use the built in dialogs), you would have to write your own dialogs. the "what's new in xbasic" lists a whole bunch of functions that let you manipulate the user accounts information

        -------------------------

to globally set the data entry style, you would set the data entry style for all of your forms/browses to "system" on the "data entry" tab on form/browse properties.

then you would use this xbasic so set the registry (same as what the view/settings dialog does)

        delete p
        p.mode = "Modeless"
        :registry.save_settings("init\DataEntry",p)

        or

        delete p
        p.mode = "Modal"
        :registry.save_settings("init\DataEntry",p)

        ----------------------------------

to display the "restore database" dialog (for the situation where there is NO current database open), you execute this xbasic:

        addin.run("overlay_restore_no_db")

to display the "restore" database dialog that is displayed when you are in a database, you run this xbasic:

        addin.run("overlay_restore")

        ----------------------------
