Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Tutorial on Prompting for Parameters at Runtime

A few days ago, I put up a message with an attached Word document that showed how you can use ASK variables in a report filter to prompt for parameters at Runtime.

This message has an attached Word document that shows an alternate method.

    Thanks Selwyn.

I noticed you used MS Word's "table" layout tool. Please please add this at some time to Alpha's WP & reporter.

I had previously hoped to use Word with Alpha instead of Alpha's reports, but because Word cannot cope with many child fields I must use Alpha's reporter. It would be great to have a similar function to Word's "table" tool!

I use Wordperfect and can't print this document. I also tried with the word viewer and couldn't print it. Would it be possible to post a copy of this in .pdf?

        Thanks

I use both WP and Word and was able to print it. However, the document is set up an inch wider than the, thus it all won't fit on the page.

Open the document and save it to another folder, any folder will do. Then, open WP, navigate to the document and WP should open it. You should be able to save it as a WP document. However, because of it's width, you'll not be able to print the document in it's entirety.

Perhaps Selwyn can give us a pointer on this or place the directions below the screen prints rather than on the side.

None the less, this is another example of Selwyns dedication to the users.

              Ken,

I ran into the same width problem, but it is easy to solve. Click on whichever images you feel are too wide, grab the lower left handle and resize it. I had to resize about 6 or 7 images down to 5". Then I move the vertical border between the images and the text AND the right-hand border and got it all with 7.5". Everything printed fine - about 8 pages.

                Hello Russ,

Selwyn has kindly said we could reproduce this tutorial in the Alpha Newsletter. I will reformat it into HTLM, so you should have no trouble printing it from there. Bad news is it will not be in until the November issue.

I found that if I open it in Open Office and changed the margins it printed fine. Open office works well as a substiture for word.

I was unable to resize the whole enchalada and finally got it to print landscape but only after I changed the page setup and the the print properties.

This was a great Tutorial, as Oliver Twist said Please Sir can we have some more. One question, If the reps field is numerical but as charaters and the filter unique_key_value() is used how can this be put into order so as not to get 1,10,11,12,13,2,3, etc?
