Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Major Whoops...HELP!

I re-indexed all of the tables in my database...now,

    1. My form that I have spent days on is gone (Oh-@#$%). In it's place is the default form for the set.

    2. My set structure now has a missing link. When I try to recreate it, Alpha locks up.

    3. When I try to view or design the table that I want to re-link, Alpha locks up.

I fear that I have destroyed days and days worth of work...I had not created a back-up since 9/12/02.

Please, If anyone has a clue of how to get back to where I was, I sure could use your advice.

    Anxiously Awaiting Positive Replys...

    1. My form that I have spent days on is gone (Oh-@#$%). In it's place is the default form for the set.

Unfortunately, in my experience, once a form is corrupted, it is history. I don't know how to get back to square one in this case.

    2. My set structure now has a missing link. When I try to recreate it, Alpha locks up.

What is missing? table? field? or just a corrupt table?

    3. When I try to view or design the table that I want to re-link, Alpha locks up.

Move the problem table to a different directory (DON'T erase it - you never know...). Recreate the table (DON'T COPY the problem table). Recreate it from scratch. If your form is attached to the set, recreating the problem table, may possibly "restore" the form.

I fear that I have destroyed days and days worth of work...I had not created a back-up since 9/12/02

Now allow me to chant my mantra...

      Louis,

What do you mean by "reindexed". Merely reindexing would not produce the results you describe. Perhaps you ran "database compact". In addition to reindexing it compacts the data dictionaries (which are themselves tables).

To add to Peter's mantra, I also do repeated "save as" while developing complex forms
      -formname01 saved as
      -formname02
      etc.
So I can retreat in tiny increments when I screw up.

All of which doesn't help you.

But we still do not know what happend. So did you compact?

      Good luck,
      Bill

"But we still do not know what happened. So did you compact?"

That is the key, trying to figure out what happened so it can be prevented. I would hope that a database compact would not be the cause. This happened to me in v4.5 but I haven't a clue what I did or the cause. It is a bit disconcerting to think that a combination of keystrokes, in whatever sequence, sent the form to Never Never Land.

Thanks to all for your help!

I moved MyTableName.* to a folder on my desktop, restored the ANCIENT back-up I did have, zipped up the table I needed and unzipped it to my database and viola! it worked.

I guess I get the dip-@#$% of the month award for not backing up my work more frequently.

          Again, thank you all!

Congrats on getting your form back! There is noting to be ashamed of. I remember in the early 80's, one day I spent 14-hours straight on a Basic program (on an IBM with two floppy drives - no hard drive), and bam, the program was blown away! Even after that ugly experience, I had several instances of major data loss due to impatience on my part.

Ah, you're wrong. I deserve that award and have earned it! Actually, I think we should probably have dip of the week and see who wins. I'm sure we could all take turns! By the way, sometimes I do smart things too.

If it weren't for the dip things, we'd never recognize the smart things! You're in good company!!
