Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Best practices: Multiple lookup, write to table

    Hi,

What is considered the best way to do the following? Any practical help will be greatly appreciated in this area, if I can do the following, I have my app licked! I have not read the Xbasic or Xdialog PDFs yet - for some reason everytime I try my system crashes (with ANY PDF). So, I am struggling to get this working smoothly.

I am busy with a library app. I have tblBooks (a list of books) and tblMembers (a list of members) and a set setBookMember of these tables.

On the "Issue Book" form (based on setBookMember) I have two fields, book_id and book_title. When a book is being issued, the user must be able to fill in EITHER field, and upon clicking a button, the other is completed (for confirmation purposes). (in case of error, I have a message box saying so).

At that point, the user performs exactly the same type of lookup procedure for members, using either the member_id or the member_surname field. Naturally, the user must be able to search for a particular member in the case that there are multiple members with the same surname.(in case of error, I have a message box saying so).

Then, the "Issue Book" button becomes active. When pushed, the member_id is copied into a member_id field in tblBook in the appropriate book's record, and the field number_books is incremented by one in tblMember.

Okay - am I correct in using the set for this form? How do I update the tblBook and tblMember tables? Or do I just update the set? Any help appreciated...

    Regards,

    Evan

    Evan,

I think you have no answers because from the post it is hard to understand what you are doing.

What is the structure of your set.
What is the layout of your form (based on the set).

You could spend a lot of time explaining this or just post your application for others to examine.

What you want to do should not be at all difficult.

      Evan,

I'm not sure I'd use a set based form.

Instead, I'd probably define table lookups in field rules. This would let the user pick the book or author off popup lists. I would think that would be preferable to typing, searching, and typing again.

RE: Best practices: Multiple lookup, write to tabl

        Hi,

In a nutshell, I am busy with a databse to track books in a library. I want to be able to issue books, and to receive returned books from members. In the table tblBook, I want to rack whether the book is in the library, or which member has it. In the tblMember table, I want to track how many books that member has.

I want one form to issue books, where I can validate both the book's and the members details. Same for returnded books.

I include a backup of the current app. Please note that thi is not intended as a working application for a client, but rather as a vehicle to teach myself. So - the db is quite messy. I will redo the entire app once I know how to do everything I want to do properly. Any advice/help appreciated.
