Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Unhandled exception in V5 optimized version

    Hi everyone,

I'm using build 1296 1009 and am getting an unhandled exception that shuts down the program as soon as it happens. Actually, to clarify, this only happens when using the network optimized version; it works fine when loading the program from the network directly. The exception happens when pushing a button on any form that has the following xbasic command: topparent.query_by_form()
I have several forms that have this button on them. Has anyone experienced this kind of problem with a network optimized version versus the regular version?
The application runs rather slow when people access the files directly from the server so I'd really like to get the shadow databases working. There are a few other issues but I'm going to address them one at a time.

    Any help will be appreciated.

RE: Unhandled exception in V5 optimized version

i just tried putting a button on a form in AlphaSports.

    the button does topparent.query_by_form()

i then network optimized AlphaSports, and from the shadow database, I clicked the button. it worked for me.

can you please try to repeat this test and see what happens on your computer.

    thanks.

RE: Unhandled exception in V5 optimized version

      Dear Selwyn,

Thanks for the reply. I was able to do what you did and it worked for me as well. I'll try to do the same with my database. What are the chances that it won't work with version 4 if I make the change with version 5? We are all still using version 4 until all the kinks are worked out.

      Thanks,
      Alan

RE: Unhandled exception in V5 optimized version

        Dear Selwyn,

I tried adding a new button (with "topparent.query_by_form()" pasted into the editor) to one of my forms. I've tried editing the original button and creating a new one with V5. Both worked when loading the original application but I get an unhandled exception in the network optimized version. We have the application running on Windows 2000 Server. The PC's that use it have the Alpha 5 folder mapped as their M: Drive.

The fact that this is a networked application that is being used constantly throughout the day makes it difficult to simply start using version 5 and expect people to stop doing their job when exceptions pop up. It also is the reason I need the optimization to work; it gets used all the time and running without optimizing slows A5 to a crawl with every added user.

Don't get me wrong, I love A5 and have sung it's praises until people around here think I'm obsessed. I think it's a fantastic product and am looking forward to learning all the benefits of the new version. Unfortunately this is the time of year within our company when I have no extra time to use for developement.

I hope this is something that can be resolved simply.

        Best regards,
        Alan

RE: Unhandled exception in V5 optimized version

if you edit a form in v5, then the form will likely not be useable in v4. that's because v5 adds new properties to a form.

          can you try this.

          1. go to one of your network workstations.
          2. open up the master copy of the app.
          3. network optimize the app (but put the shadow database in a new folder called (say) 'tempshadow'.

          4. you are now working with a temporary shadow of your master, which you can keep working on without disturbing any of your existing users on the network.

          5. open one of the forms in the tempshadow database. (if you edit a form in a shadow database, the edits are local to the shadow database --- they have no impact on the master database, and infact, when you refresh the shadow, the edit are overwritten -- so there is no harm in experimenting with this temporary shadow).

          6. add a button to this form to do topparent.query_by_form()

does it crash when you run it?

if so, then i will try to reproduce your situtation here at alpha if you send me a copy of the database.

            Dear Selwyn,

I did a network optimization and edited one of the forms, adding a button which did the topparent.query_by_form()
function. It still gives me the exception when pushing it.
If I send you a copy of the database do you need all the files associated with it?

            Thanks,
            Alan

              alan.

it would be best if you sent me everything. if you try to guess what i need, and then if it turns out that you missed files, it just delays everything as we go back and forth tring to collect all of the files.

i also need to know the names of the folders in which the master database and the shadow database are stored, and then i need to know the EXACT set of steps that you went through to cause the crash.

              thanks.

RE: Unhandled exception in V5 optimized version

                Selwyn,

Before I send you the files I'd like to gather a little more info to give you. I believe that the problem is something different than what I first thought. It seems that I get the unhandled exception as soon as I do anything on that form that takes focus away from the initial field. When I found that out I tried the process of elimination and began taking things off the form.
I had some fields as read only . . . I removed that format but it didn't help. I have a memo field . . . I removed that but it didn't help either. I thought about removing the embedded browse but since other forms work that have embedded browses I decided I'm going to make an all new form in version 4 and see if it has the same problem.

I'll keep you informed. Thanks for all your help.

RE: Unhandled exception in V5 optimized version

                  Selwyn,

I have a bit more information about my application. If this information doesn't help then I'll probably have to send you the entire application as I can't see how portions will make it duplicatable.

The difficulty I'm having is tied to a table that has an autoincrementing character field as well as a field which is linked to an ODBC lookup table. I'm having the ODBC table being exported in an Access format from a separate application into the Alpha Five program folder.

In A5V4 I created a blank form attached to this table and then added only the ODBC lookup field to it. When opening this form directly from the network it worked fine, but when I optimized it and opened it, it gave me the error and closed A5V5.

Does this help or should I send you the entire app?

                  Thanks,
                  Alan
