Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Which operating system does alpha5v5 works best on XP or Windows 2000? I have been using windows 2000, but I have heard that XP pro is pretty good to.

XP Works better with A5v5..to me.

I've always had a problem with printers when using a5 over a network..
ex: I have 4 workstations using win98 and one station using win 2000...my server is using NTServer..when ever I network or optimize the database the workstation using win2000, printer doesn't work in a5.."message no printer configured"..All stations are sharing the main network printer.

I never figured out the problem.

        Robert,

My truck runs on mix fuel, 87 octane no lead and 90 octane no lead. It doesn't run all that well though when I mix the fuels.

My truck is supposed to run an all three fuels as is A5 but when the OS' are 'mixed', perhaps it's one OS not wanting to mix completly with another? I also know it takes a bit of $$ to upgrade the OS on the computers but if you did, I think you'd solve the problem.

I've been runing A5 on 2000 and have noticed that the system goes into a 90% processor utilization mode. The system runs on XP about the same. I don't know where the resource hog is but it's getting a pretty good meal from A5.

Yes, but each workstation still has to have its own printer drivers for the network printer. Win 2k (and presumably XP) uses entirely different printer drivers than those used by win98, and your app is probably assuming (or specifying) the win98 printer setup. I would be interested to know if XP solves that problem, as I assume it uses printer drivers more closely related to the w2k drivers.

Yes that is true..each station has it's own printer driver,, the cp with win2000 on it would not..I would have to manualy go into the shadows folder and reset the printers for my a5 applications forms.. Also the names of the network printers were renamed....I have to do this every time I re optimize the systems.

                    Robert,

You misunderstood. I was merely trying to point out that with a system such as yours with the number of Operating Systems you're using, it's realistic to expect that not everything is going to run as it should. I used my truck as an example of what is supposed to work but doesn't work all that well under certain conditions.

Additionally, with several OS on the same network, trouble shooting is considerably more complicated, as you found out.

Where I work we have a big network with a variety of operating systems on the local stations. This has never been a problem for me.

This is a huge problem for me with a v4.5 app.

With A5V5 there is theoretically a way to deal with this problem (invloving a setup for each workstation specifying its printer and thus its specific printer driver instead of whatever the development machine had). If I ever get enough money saved up to be able to afford v5 (I don't want to talk about that!) I am going to build a what is needed to get around the problem. Maybe soemone else has already done it.
