Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Programming help-What is the best way?

I have a set where vendor invoice is the parent and inventory is the child. If the user enters the invoice to add inventory and there is no such inventory listed yet what is the best way to create the inventory record since none has been created yet? I sure hope I asked this question right! All ideas invited!!!

    David,

Check out the Alpha Sports app that comes with v5. You could probable copy it and make changes to suite your needs. Why reinvent the wheel?

Thanks for your response. I looked at it but I didn't find anything close. What I am trying to do is adding a new item in without know it is new. For instance, I get something in and my usual thing is to add the invoice into inventory. Suddenly, I enter a number and it doesnt know what it is. Let's say model # a211-5w. Never had it in inventory before. I try to add and it doesnt know what it is. So, what do I do?

in field rules for the parent table - make the child a lookup table - and let user add records

Adding to William's idea, in field rules check the box for Must Excist. You will find it under the Validations Tab, select Cross File Validation, then select Simple. You then select the table and then field. So when you key in a stock code if it is not there you get an error to that effect. Even put bubble help on the lookup feild to warn the user. Once the user has understood its meaning they can then have a button to take them to a form to add new Inventry. Hope this Helps.

I appreciate the ideas. I already have it as a lookup table anyway. What I was trying to do was to have alpha create a record in inventory without having to add to records. So, when the user enters the data, it sees that that particular record does not exist therefore it knows to make a new one. It would then ask for a couple of extra fields to fill and then add the record behind the scenes. I know I can have it ask for the info with xdialog, I just have never created a new record behind the scenes.

You can create a new record "behind the scenes" using action scripting. See Record, xbasic enter record in the action scripting dialog. It will do the work for you.

Russ, that works awesome. Ok, new question. I am entering into a browse. The first field in that browse is the part number. Is there a way once I leave that first column that when it sees that there is no txternal record that I can come up with my dialog box to enter variable info. Or, do I have to go thru the 5 columns first such as onrow change? Whenever I enter the part number it does a lookup to pull inventory info. I would like to immediately to see that there is no record. Ideas?
