Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Setting directory for "Open a Database"

Is there a way I can get Alpha 5 v5 so that when I use Open a database, it goes to a certain directory? I have my Alpha files in a directory about 5 layers below where it opens up and it is a nuisance to go down the tree everytime I start the program.

    Thanks.

    RE: Setting directory for

Do you have a specific Application you're trying to open up? If you do, like I do, then here's a solution ...

I'd copy the A5 Icon, then right mouse click on it and go to properties. In the target field I have:

    C:\A5V5\alpha5.exe -splash=iac3.bmp -title="I.A.C." C:\A5V5\data\instar win\InStar Prospect & Customers.adb

In the start in I have: "C:\A5V5\data\InStar Win"

The splash brings up my logo replacing the Alpha5 logo. The title puts I.A.C. in the Window replacing Alpha 5. These 2 things make the program look more like it came from me than being an Alpha5 program. After the title is where I chose which application I wanted to run.

I have a number of Alpha5 Icons on my desktop (in a folder) with a setup like above for my main programs I run.

    Hope this helps.

      RE: Setting directory for

I think I know what you mean, if i click on 'More Databases' it always goes to 'My Documents' (In V4.5).

I have put a shortcut in 'My Documents' to the folder that contains my databases. It is then only a click away rather than having to navigate up and down trees.

If you give the shortcut a name starting with ! it will always bee at the top of the list.

Interesting approach. Too bad that A5 does not allow you to set this in the program. Other programs I use do give you this option.

            RE: Setting directory for

there wasn't, but now there is.

i just added a new feature for you.

you can now go to View/Settings (form the a5 top level menus) and then go to the Directories section where you can specify a default folder for the New database command and the Open database command.

if you leave this setting blank, then a5 reverts to the current behavior, which is to use the current folder as the default for the new database, and open database.

p.s. this new feature will be in the next patch, which we expect to post later today, or tomorrow.
