Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Filtering items in a Drop Down Record List Object

I have a form that will be used to place items into a table, tbl_Catalog_Items.

One field on the form is a dropdown record list named "Manufacturers" whose data comes from tbl_Manufacturers. This field functions properly.

Another field on the form is a dropdown record list named "System_Type" whose data comes from tblsystem_types.

First I choose a manufacturer, then a system type. All of this works great.

What I would like to do is only show system types that are made by the manufacturer the user has selected.

I have tried (for several hours now) to create a filter within the "System Types" object with no hint of success in sight.

    I'm sure I'm making a simple mistake.

If anyone could lend a hand it would make my day !

    Thanks

    Louis

    Could you not
-get the user's choice of type into a variable, and
-use the variable in the lookup's filter expression?

      Thanks for the reply...

I am setting the value of a variable (vc_man) upon a change in the manufacturer record.

I have filtered the "system_Type" object to reflect records where the manufacturer are equal to the value of the vc_man.

When I view the form, the only system types that will show are the ones that match the manufacturer that was the currently selected manufacturer when the form was initially viewed.

Any existing records that I want to change, or any new records that I create will only give me system types for that manufacturer, regardless of the manufacturer I have selected.

      Any Ideas?

"I am setting the value of a variable (vc_man) upon a change in the manufacturer record."

Do you mean on change for the data in the table or form? What if you merely fetch the next record? There has been no change but the currently viewed value is no longer the same.

Have you considered setting the value of the variable in the form's on_fetch event?

Seems like I am working on the same type of application as you. It took me a week to figure this out. Here goes.
I have 2 tables, products and vendors. They are linked in a set by Vendor ID.
In the lookup table for the product Id,(field rules) I have the following filter.
          vendor=products->vendor ID.
When I enter an order for a customer on the order form.
The embedded browse( item details). The lookup only shows those items for that manufacturer. It works great.

            Thanks,

That is certainly a good way. Whether you use the current value or a variable which you can fill according to need depends on your circumstances.
