Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is it possible to create a "Front-Page" database connection to my a5v5 database?

If so, could someone please help me through the process.

How would you normally create a FrontPage Database connection?

      RE: Web Development

      Thanks for your reply...

I have pasted the instructions from the Front Page help file below.

Create a new database connection using a custom definition
To display information from, or input information to, a database, FrontPage uses a database connection. The database connection specifies the name, location, and type of database you want to access, along with any other parameters it may require.

Some database drivers for network database management systems require a large number of configuration parameters. Using the ODBC control panel, a database administrator can create a File Data Source Name (File DSN) containing all of these parameters on the Web server. You can then import the File DSN to your web and connect to it to create a new custom database connection. You can also connect to a Universal Data Link (UDL) file.

If a given database driver requires parameters that you can't set using FrontPage, you can create a custom database connection to edit the connection string that will be passed to the database driver. When you use a custom definition connection, you have to make a distinction between browse-time and author-time authentication (with any other type of database connection the browse-time and author-time authentication are the same). The author-time username and password are verified by FrontPage in the Database tab of the Web Settings dialog, Database Results wizard, and Save to Database form handler. The browse-time username and password are used to open a connection when a page is viewed in a Web browser.

When you use a custom database connection file, the author-time username and password must be present in the DSN or UDL file. When you use a custom definition string, the author-time username and password must be present in the connection string. Connection-string syntax is provider-specific; however, for most ODBC connections, you would add UID and PWD attributes (for example, UID=username;PWD=password).

When you start the Database Results Wizard, you specify the database connection you want to use. To create a new connection using a custom definition, do the following:

In Page view, open a page containing an existing database results region, or create a new page to contain the database results, and then start the Database Results Wizard:
If you haven't yet run the wizard to create a database results region on the page, point to Database on the Insert menu, and then click Results.
If the page already contains a database results region, and you want to replace that data with data from a different database connection, right-click anywhere in the database results region, and then click Database Results Properties on the shortcut menu.
In step 1 of the wizard, click Use a new database connection, and then click Create.
Click Add, and then type a name for the new database connection in the Name box.
Click Custom definition, and then select a File DSN, UDL file, or edit a connection string:
To select a File DSN or UDL file in the current web, click Browse. In the URL box, type the path to the File DSN or UDL file to which you want to connect, and then click OK. Or, use the Look in box and file list to navigate to the File DSN or UDL file you want, and then double-click the file in the list.
To edit a connection string, click Advanced. In the Connection string box, type the appropriate string to pass to the database driver to which you want to connect. Click OK.
Click OK to close the New Database Connection dialog box, and then click OK to close the Web Settings dialog box.
      Tips

To create a new database connection for a web without running the Database Results Wizard, click Web Settings on the Tools menu, click the Database tab, and then follow this procedure starting at step 3.
Do not use a File DSN to connect to a database file in the current web; the File DSN will contain file paths that are incorrect for the Web server. Instead, under Type of connection, click File or folder in current web.
Any timeouts or other name-value parameters for the database must be contained in the File DSN. If they are not, click Advanced, and then type the appropriate information.
The database driver referred to by the File DSN or the connection string must be present on the Web server for the connection to work properly.

        OK, did you try that?

          RE: Web Development

Yes but Front Page does not recogize my a5v5 (.ADB)database as one that a connection can be made to.

I think I've just answered my own question...

I was hoping there might be someone out there who had discovered a way to do this.

What I am wanting to do is give my users a web browser interface to the database. guess I'll just have to wait for the Alpha Web Server.

            RE: Web Development

You need to create connections to the tables (.DBF) individually, you won't be able to connect to the overall application (.ADB). As far as I know, this is true with Access and other database software as well when you are using ODBC and is not a limitation of Alpha Five specifically.
