Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Issue with table lookup

I found a problem when using a table lookup with field defined to "display as dropdown list" so it will auto-fill as the user types.

Everything works fine with the following lookup list:
    Test 1
    Test 2
    Test 3

However, this list causes a problem:
    Test
    Test 1
    Test 2

Once you type "Test" with the second list, the other 2 can no longer be accessed by typing. The only way to reach them is through the drop-down list itself.

My work-around for now is to add an underscore on the end of the word:
    Test_
    Test 1
    Test 2

When using "Previous Values" this is NOT an issue.

        Cal:
I am having the same problem.
seems that if you use the mouse to select, the lookup box does not give focus to the selected record.
the focas stays on the first record.
But if you use the up and down arrow keys and then depress the enter key, the record fills in correctly.

Think we need to report this one to alpha?

Having the same problem, but arrow keys and enter work fine. Thought there was something funny going on here.

            Charlie,

It sounds like you are having a slightly different, or additional, problem. I'm having no problem with using either the mouse or the arrow keys. (I better reserve the right to double check that - I'm not on my regular PC right now.)

My problem was only with the typing WHEN there are two or more similar entries and at least one of those entries has more words than the other. Once you get to the end of the shortest "matching phrase", you cannot add a space and find the longer phrases. By adding an underscore to the shorter phrase (one word in my example), it is no longer a "matching phrase".

              RE: Issue with table lookup

There is a mouse issue. This sounds like what Bradley was talking about. I think it has been reported before but I can't find a reference to exactly the same thing.

If I have 5 values in the lookup list and the current value is #3, I cannot click on item 2 or 4 (i.e., either side of the currently selected value) until after I click on a selection further away.

Seems there is more than one issue on these lookup lists. (Maybe all caused by the same problem?)

                Cal et all,

I've been watching this thread since I also have a problem with table lookups. In one case all works as you would expect; you can use the up/down arrows, the mouse wheel and the mouse click. In another the mouse click will not work. I've tried to spot differences and cannot find any. Perhaps, as you suggest Cal, these are all related to a single issue in the program.

I have been struggling with this on and off and thought it was just me. Guess I'll not look at it for a while.

                      RE: Issue with table lookup

Just to add my 2 pence worth, in Alpha Sports if you enter new Invoice, the Customer lookup table opens automatically. The mouse will NOT click onto the second row, it will click on the third row and then the second. If you click up to the first row it gets stuck again and wont click back on the second row.
I think Brenden knows about missing data from the drop down list box.
