Default Need help with Trace window

    Hi

Have been successfully entering data into a table without problems but then duplicated table and forms etc earlier today and since then cannot enter data into the original table without getting error messages.

The contents of the trace window is detailed below and if anyone can point me in the right direction would appreciate.

    --------------------

Warning [1]: Error(s) opening rules for field: VISITORTEAMKEY
Warning [2]: Error adding calculated rule to database engine.
Warning [3]: Error(s) opening rules for field: VISITORTEAMKEY
Warning [4]: Error parsing 'calc' rules expression.

    ----------------------

It refers to a field VISITORTEAMKEY but I cannot see anything wrong with the field rules for this field and at a loss!

I have attached the relevant table

    Help gratefully received

    Aaaaaaaaaaaggggghhhhhhh

To update my original note, the error message was appearing all over the database so I have restored a backup I did before this round of development and problem has gone away. BUT I am intrigued over the fact that this problem occured immediately after I dupicated a table.

Still I guess the moral is BACKUP regularly! Phew!

    Hi Glen,

My theory is that a .DDD file did not get copied / or got overwritten during the duplicate operation. The .DBF files are backward compatible with dbase, and the limit for field names is 10 characters in dBase. To get around this limitation, we store a 'long fieldnames' in the .DDD file. While this approach assures back-compatibility, it can give rise to problems when the .DDD file goes -missing - i.e. all the long names get truncated, and all of the sudden all the references to fields with names > 10 characters turn into warnings..

    Cian

    Thanks for the info

I guess the moral is: keep field names to max 10 length if possible and alway backup!

    Regards

    Glen
