Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Single Document Interface added to v5!

    Hello All,

Just want to point out an enhancement to version 5 that may escape notice. SDI (single document interface) like control has been added. I think this is a big deal, and will make it easier to 'control' the users movement through an application.

    Jim

    From the patch documentation:

SDI Style Applications - You can now create applications that resemble SDI(Single Document Interface) applications. A SDI application does not have min/max/restore buttons on the menu bar. To specify a SDI style application, select the File/Database command, and check the "Turn off n/Max.." checkbox. (Note: This checkbox only appears if you have
specified a startup form, and if you have specified that the startup form should be maximized

glad you like it. i was surprised that no one had commented on it :)

equally surprised that no one commented on the addition of HTML email, which is also, i think, quite a big deal :)

SDI is a long awaited power feature that brings A5 one more step closer to its goal. This feature is greatly appreciated!

Perhaps someone might be willing to take a few minutes to describe SDI and how it might used in an application, why it should be used in an application and perhaps attach an example??

SDI is here - But excuse my ignorance, what is it and what does it do for us?

              Selwyn,

I am in serious new feature overload, a previously undescribed medical condition. Thank God there's a support group as I would otherwise be lost.

The sdi feature is great but you did too good a job. It's so easy to use nobody has any questions.

RE: Single Document Interface added to v5!

                Hello,

SDI (single document interface) is more akin to what we would see in the DOS world. Basically one screen at a time, where you can not go to another screen without closing the current screen. MDI (multiple document interface)is the 'normal' windows behavior where you can have as many windows open as you want, ie: as many copies of a form as you desire, switching back and forth between windows and programs. This is all well and good, but many times we need to be able to control a users movement through an application. MDI allows a user to be in the middle of one process, and at will, minimize it and go on to other processes. In our database world, this is not necessarily a good thing. Take for example, being in the middle of entering data into a memo field. While in this process, the user minimizes this form and opens another form, possibly opening the same set. The the user decided to go to lunch, comes back and opens up another instance of the set and begins to enter data. All this time, 20 other users on the network are doing the same thing. Add in a few filtered indexes............ well, you can see where this is going. SDI gives us the ability easily control the users path through the application. Allowing them to only have one form open at a time if that is what we desire.

WOW! Thanks a lot Jim, and here I thought that SDI was Starwars Defense Initiative.

It's really simple & makes sense when it's explained!

You may recall, Selwyn, I sent you an App that attempted to run in SDI mode after hiding the A5 frame and it worked well to a point. Alas, it did crash at a certain point (usually at about 4 to 5 forms deep). Since that time, I converted it back to run within the A5 frame. So now Ill re-convert it and try the whole process over. You did mention at the time that you would try to get this in a future version. Pretty snappy response. Thanks. I do look forward to trying this again.

                            Hi Ohlen,

I doubt it. As I understand it, version 5's implementation of SDI is not 'true' SDI, it is just that they have added the capability to remove the maximize-restore, and minimize buttons and the file menu. Starting the app maximized and choosing these options prevent the user from minimizing or restoring the screen, hense preventing the user from clicking outside the active window. This could be accomplished before but with more work. The user can still use the task manager (control-tab I believe) to switch between running programs just as they can with DOS programs. It just that they can't move off the active A5 screen until they do what we want them to. I for one, like this very much and will put it to good use.

I haven't worked with it yet, but I'd guess that all capabilities of version 5 will still be available to us even in SDI mode.

Have you cake and eat it too!

                            Jim

                              Hi Gary,

About the same in concept, but with SDI capability built-in it should be a lot easier to implement an entire app.
