Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Drop down list box

Can the display be controlled a bit - such as how wide the columns are, the wisth of the entire table, etc.

    yes it can.
where are you defining the drop down list box? in field rules- table lookup? if so, then just increase/decrease the column widths when you define the table lookup

      RE: Drop down list box

Great - thanks. Now, how can I make the list box pop up immediately upon entry. I don't seem to be able to do it through fields rules, or am I missing something? Do I need to use the OnArrive event of the field with the command that causes the lookup table to open (what is that command again??)

        RE: Drop down list box

        Shouldn't this work:

I put sys_send_keys({%down}) in the CanArrive event of the fields.

When I do this, I get the error message:

        Script: CanArrive line 15
        sys_send_keys({%down})
        invalid date constant

        What am I doing wrong??

              Gary,

You never answered Selwyn's question when he asked if you were defining the list box in field rules or in form properties. If you are using field rules there is a "popup on entrance" setting. If the list is programmed into the form you may have to use keystrokes as above.

                  RE: Drop down list box

Sorry ... I have been trying both ways and experimenting with different effects. So far, I like defining the controls within the form itself - however, I have noticed a problem. I have 7 record list-combo boxes on the form. Now, when the form is loaded, the last few control fields paint slow enough that you can see the form painting - I hope this is clear. And thanks for all the help.

It seems like more than a few list combo controlson this form slows down the painting to a noticeable level. Converting 2 or 3 back to regular type in fields eliminates the problem. Is this normal?

                        RE: Drop down list box

I created a list box on a form with the tool bar and then selected the field. It works fine except that I can no longer make the selection by typing the word.

Previously, If I could choose from the following: Cash, Check, Money Order. If I typed ca, and pressed enter, Cash was selected. If I typed ch and pressed enter, check was selected. Now, this doesn't work at all.

Is there any way to get around this slow repainting issue?

                            Gary,

From what you say, it sounds like it occurs just for that feature? Frankly, I think it's a bug, particular to your setup. I've never experienced this nor have I heard of the issue.

How creating a test database with a couple of small tables and a few fields. See what happen's there. Perhaps it's something in the database???

BTW, which lookup are you using in the drop down list?

Thanks for the reply Ken. I think it happens because I have a lot of fields on the form, and as the number of list-combo fields increases, you begin to notice the slow repainting.

BTW, which lookup are you using in the drop down list?
