Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    help for a newbie

    Dear gentlemen,
    I have just downloaded a5v5 upgrade from v 4.5.
I have some questions for you(sorry if these questions have already been addressed).
1)when i load a5 v5 1248_1033 i get the error message "cannot load the pdf/html/rtf driver" then i click the OK button and everything seem allright (please note i have no printer installed).
2)I uninstalled (control panel) v 4.5 that disappeared from the list of installed applications but the program is always in the programs/a5v4 directory and is launchable from the start button.
3)Since I have bought the upgrade version of a5v5, do i need v4.5 to run it?
4)If i make an application with v5, can i run it from 4.5, obviously excluding all the new functions of v5.
Thank you very much and pity for my poor English ;-)

Make sure you have the latest patches. They are available on the support tab from the alpha home page.

2)I uninstalled (control panel) v 4.5 that disappeared from the list of installed applications but the program is always in the programs/a5v4 directory and is launchable from the start button.

No need to uninstall A5V4.5. V5 loads to it's own folder. Both programs can exist on the same machine at the same time.

If you go to Windows Explorer and double click on your application, the app will open with whatever was the last version of Alpha you ran. I suggest you copy your app to another folder and experiment with V5 on the copy.

Then open A5V5, find the copy of your app and open it.

3)Since I have bought the upgrade version of a5v5, do i need v4.5 to run it?

No, but you need V4.5 to load it.

4)If i make an application with v5, can i run it from 4.5, obviously excluding all the new functions of v5.

No! (I think). However, apps made with V4.5 are supposed to be compatible with V5.0.

      1. There are only 3 people in the World that have gotten that message about the PDF driver. They are you, a person from the Black Hills and I. Alpha is working on discovering the cause and getting it corrected. It will not hurt you but you cannot use the 3 drivers that it lists.
      2. Uninstalling Ver 4.5 - I have no ideas on that question.
      3. You do not have to have Ver 4.5 in order to run Ver. 5.
      4. I believe that the recommendation is to NOT expect an application written using Ver 5 to be able to run using Ver 4.5, you may have some problesm with forms - there are many changes and improvements which may not be backward compatible as far as formats are concerned.

          Ok,
I formatted the hard disk, reinstalled Windows XP and Alpha 5 v.5; no more error message when i load Alpha 5 but:
          - very low start up (already discussed in other threads)
          - I launch Alphasports, click on reports, click on invoices, click preview/print, click on save in Acrobat PDF format (or RTF, or plain text)and my system goes to sleep for about 15-20 seconds, after opening Acrobat or Word; then everything seems to work, but very very (and very)slow.
          - when I close Alpha 5, I have to wait for about 15-20 seconds before I can load other programs or simply click on the start button.
          Thanks again for your help
