Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

"Ask user" variables in report not worki

I have a report that I print that has a couple of "ask user" variables in them to allow a user to easily select their criteria. When the report is selected to print, A5 asks the user to enter invoice date and the customer they want to print.

This works fine in A5V4, but I can not get it to work in A5V5. If I select my conditions at print time, the report prints fine, however, if I set up the report to ask the user enter their their criteria in a dialog box, the user can enter the criteria, but the report never prints or previews.

I have installed both patches and am running w2k. Is anyone else running into this problem and does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Rick

    RE:

there have been a lot of changes to ask variables, and i am pretty confident that they work well.
there must be something very specific about your report.

i would need to get a copy of your report to investigate the problem.

please zip the table or set for which the report was created and send it to me at [email protected]

p.s. to zip and send, just right click on the table or set in the control panel and select send..

          RE:

          what is the "same problem"?
if you are referring to the "problem" reported by in the first message on this thread, then you should know that he was not in fact having an error.

his post about an error turned out to be erroneous after he sent his files to me.

so, if you think you have an error with ask variables, can you please describe exactly what it is, and attach a sample file to your reply that demoes the problem.

            RE: ASK variables

I am using ASK variables extensively with v5. They work well. The only gotcha was I had ASKD_Start_Date and ASKD_End_Date. In V5 ASK variables are displayed in the same dialog in alphabetical order. The help file was very "helpful" in telling that you should rename your ASK variables with an integer so that they are displayed in the order you specify. So my ASK variables become ASKD_1_Start_Date and ASKD_2_End_Date and they work great.

              RE:

The problem I had is that whenever I would print my report, A5 would let me enter the variables, to proceed I would have to CLICK the OK button, Pressing ENTER did not work. I was able to reproduce the problem on a Win98 machine, (I use a Win200 machine). Try clicking the OK button to see if that makes a difference for you.

Also, to say I had an error is incorrect. My report simply would not print, preview.

                    Selwyn,

Ditto from Houston, TX. This saves a lot of time and easy to get "CORRECT" file to send out via email.

Thanks for all the work for this zip and send feature.

                      RE: Variable asks

                      Thanks Rick,

I just spent three hours trying to figure out why this variable wouldn't work as it had in previous verions of A5. The "OK" button is highlighted as primary. When one hits enter the dialog box goes away like it responds to the keystroke, but infact it must take it as cancel. Not sure whats involved, but I'd like to see this corrected by Alpha at some point.
