Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Rich Text Import Export

Can someone please check to see if the Rich Text Import Export Function shows up under edit. These options are not showing up for me.

    Per Help:

    "Importing and Exporting Rich Text
When you are using the Rich Text Editor, you can export the text to an RTF file or import text from an RTF file by using the Export RTF file and Import RTF file commands in the Edit menu."

    Thanks ... John

The help is wrong. It was left over from the V4 help.

This feature does not exist in V5. If you want to import/export from the RTF memo editor, you need to use the clipboard to copy/paste text.

If this is something that you reall need, we can look at what would be involved in implementing the feature in V5.

      RE: Rich Text Import Export

I no longer need it, but assuming (!) there was an easy way to export text from rich text memos I did a project in the beta where in the end the idea was to export everything to WordPerfect (or Word or whatever, it didn't much matter, except I hate using Word). The point of doing it in V5 was to test the v5 spell checking and to use V5 to organize the records before exporting. When I discovered there was no easy way to export memo text, I ended up using a print file of a report, as copying and pasting of about 100 records is not something I wanted to do.

If you add an export function, please try to do one that puts soft returns where appropriate at the end of lines instead of hard returns. The only way I could get soft returns in the WP document was through copy and paste, which was not a practical option. I tried various print options (rtf, pdf, txt, etc.) and tried various Wp's for importing the file (WordPerfect, Word, Open Office Writer, etc.), none of which gave me soft returns everywhere there were in the memo field. Interestingly, Open Office Writer (same as the new Star Office from Sun but free) did the best job, i.e., fewer misplaced hard returns to deal with manually.

        RE: Rich Text Import Export

        Selwyn -

I have an application that uses this feature and, as a matter of fact, I've just started converting it from A5v3 so this subject is very timely.

I use the feature to *load* boilerplate text or accounting column setups in a Quotation package. This is a feature that clients especially like since it saves them time in processing a new quote. It also more closely approximates word processing capabilities normally available today.

Using Xbasic I export the selected text to a RT file and then import the exported text into a saved RTF memo. I'm able to suppress the screen flashes to a degree that the flutter is acceptable. The last-exported text is then available for succeeding quotations as a simple "insert".

I didn't explore the RTF export/ import feature in the beta versions or I would have spoken up earlier. Obviously, I vote for it being reinstated -- perhaps with Ray's improvements.

Thanks, I tried cut and past first but did not realize at the time that I was copying multiple regions. When all else fails read the instructions .... I've gone back and have now successfully used this feature.
