Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Unhandled Exception

Did you all see this message from Sewlyn? It solved my problem.

I think we have identified the problem of the unhandled exception. it seems to be very specifically tied to certain printer drivers (e.g. cannon bj 5100 as on example) where an alternate API call must be made to get the paper sizes supported by the printer. we are in the process of fixing this now and will put out a patch.

any user who is experiencing an unhandled exception error could verify this by selecting a different printer driver as their default printer driver. exiting from a5, and then restarting it.

ditto: Calcs are impossible to work with. In beta and now the final version. I hope someone can help soon. All my apps are at a stand still until I can use calcs reliably.

Yes I have changed my printer driver from HP LaserJet 2100 to plain text driver and the unhandled exception problem goes away.

Another printer to add to the offenders list.

                RE: Unhandled Exception

We downloaded the Xerox750 printer driver - and the windows2000 USB printer driver crashes on our test system with AlphaFive, but it also crashes from WordPad, From NotePad and from a simple program we wrote that does nothing more than attempt to open the default printer...

We are attempting to find a program that this driver does work with + trying to determine if some other interaction (perhaps with nalpha five) is causing the crash.

One question - is Alpha Five the only program that currently crashes with the xerox printer driver & if not did the printer driver *not* crash before alpha five was installed

                1) If installing A5 causes the printer driver to crash for other programs on print that used to work fine, then this may indicate that we installed something that the xerox printer driver also uses, but is either an older or newer version - (i.e. a .DLL version problem). I know that the AMI-UNI drivers install printers in the printer folder under windows 2000.

                2) If A5 is the only program that currently has a problem with the xerox 750 printer driver than the problem lies elsewhere (my next guess would be a Stack Fault -- which can be caused if the Application and the Printer consume more stack than the application allows). This is not a problem under earlier NT implementation, and I am not sure this is true about windows2000 or XP, however - I remember reading that some system calls that used to be running in separate process spaces get moved into a shared space after windows nt 4.0 to improve performance and reduce memory usage.
(A note - we ran into stack fault crashes when we initially switched from WinHelp to HTMLHelp because HtmlHelp required more stack space - the fix ended up being running HtmlHelp in a separate Process)
