Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Unhandled Exception

    PS
I have been using Alpha since A4v1 and have been with everyone else waiting anxiously for this latest release. It is great, and would like to thank everyone for their efforts. Alpha has always been able to make end users and managers into information heros at my work places, this is going to make it even better.

      RE: Unhandled Exception

Yes, same problem as you Peter

      (1)
Happens on the Alpha Sports application when I click the Customers button on the main Invoice menu. Unfortunately it doesnt happen every time..

Alpha5 Unrecoverable Error: Unhandled exception. Alpha5 will do a forced termination" error messages.
AMD athlon, 1400MHz, windows ME, 256 ram.
Scary that the shipped example doesnt work flawlessly.

I did not find problems in the beta but my apps are simple.

      (2)
If I uninstall, them re-install, will the same Activation Key work?

Are you around on Sunday Selwyn?

        To All

        This is too WEIRD.

Selwyn requested I re-send my complete app to him for testing. Prior to doing so I re-tested the app.
You guessed it, NO PROBLEM, works just as it should !! No unhandled exceptions, no calc field problem. If I hadn't taken screen snapshots of the problem, I might think I was cracking up.

Did however notice a couple of other things.
When printing or previewing a report with a graphic field if no image is present prints IMAGE. Should be blank
When printed as PDF, image is distorted horizontally.
Although I hesitate to mention it, the 3 navigation buttons (Index Find, select, find by form) displayed once only, as some weird image. Cannot reproduce ?

        Anyone else's problem disappeared.

            Hello Robin,

Yes it is a bit scary! If you uninstall and reinstall on the same computer the activation key will work.

              RE: Unhandled Exception

              To Tom:

Tom, I'm using USA Windows settings as they are installed by Win 98 by default - I've made no changes in these. I don't know if this would matter but my app was built on 4.5 bld 266 3-user pack.

I'm unable to avoid the A5 Close dialog in a 4.5 ported personal app; the sample invoice; and CAN'T fix the 'missing calc field' syndrome. Redoing these in A5V5 won't fix the existing app and default samples - sometimes you can save the re-entered calc field and see it one time on the next run - then it dissappears - sometimes you get kicked out during the attempts to reinstate it with 'Error1' or the A5 unhandled exception shut down. Calc fields all dissappear in all reports on the home made app and the sample reports. Tom this has happened to Three intel processor machines here, all with Win98, 2 desktops and one portable that I own and it involved the Beta build 1215.

What's really worse is that all of this is intermittent - sometime you see em and sometimes you don't.

All of this is scarey enough that I haven't ordered the anything yet - as I wonder if V5 CAN work on my machines all of which work very reliably on all other software I use, including V4.5 bld 266.

Help an old man... "You say the 'server needs to be reset on our end." Does that mean that build 1215 is what is currently being sold?

                      RE: Unhandled Exception

                      Peter,
After playing more with V5, I have come to the conclusion that the only problem that I have is with the Canon 5100 printer, the others that I would typically use with my apps work fine, no crashes. Even others that do not have proper margins will bring up the trim box and continue on as needed. I have tried my apps and they all work fine except for known errors of my own design, just as they did in the beta. I know this is not related to your reported exceptions, but just wanted you to know that my problems go away by not using that printer, which is an easy fix. Time to get the runtime and make the move to V5. Sounds like you are sorting some of it out also.

                        Hello James,
Thanks for the feedback. I haven't got as far as actually printing yet but I have a solid dat's work ahead of me today so I hope work-out some of the problems, including printing reports.

Like you I am looking forward to the runtime and making full use of the product. Exciting times,

The Alpha5 Unrecoverable Error: Unhandled exception. Alpha5 will do a forced termination" error message, is still occurring after re-installation.

How can I use a program that does this? Well I cant. If it is a conflict with something else on my system, I would like to know how to go about finding it. I have run Norton and disconnected the scanner.

I am still amazed that the sample Alpha Sports program has got terminal bugs, whatever the cause. I sincerely hope reviewers dont have this problem as I, like everyone on this board want Alpha to do well.

                          Here is what happens:
On clicking INVOICES in the Main menu I get 4 errors. In the trace window they are

Warning [1]: Field object references a nonexistent field: CALC->total.
Warning [2]: Field object references a nonexistent field: CALC->amt_disc.
Warning [3]: Field object references a nonexistent field: CALC->amt_tax.
Warning [4]: Field object references a nonexistent field: CALC->grand_total.

                          ======Session 2======================
                          INVOICE MENU recno = 0 order= key=:0
                          =====================================
                          ======Session 4======================
                          INVOICE_HEADER recno = 0 order= key=:0
                          CUSTOMER recno = 54 order=Customer_I key=00000055:54
                          INVOICE_ITEMS recno = 0 order=Invoice_Nu key=000001:0
                          PRODUCT recno = 30 order=Product_Id key=P031 :30
                          VENDOR recno = 4 order=Vendor_Id key=V005 :4

On clicking CUSTOMERS in the Main menu I get the forced termination message.

Any ideas from anyone or tech. Support or Selwyn?
Could it be Alpha is not handling its windows memory correctly?

                              Hello Daryl,
I have win98se and winME both are impossible to use at present. The Alpha Sprots app. gives all the errors listed above and an applicition I created using Version 5 Beta come up with all sorts of errors on forms and browses, both when designing and using them!

I am about to try creating an applicationunder V5 and see what happens. If these problems cannot be resolved I shall be requesting a refund until such time as Alpha can release a 'working' version.

Have you tried reinstalling the program?

If not, do so. A5 should request a reboot at the end of the install process. The first time I installed it did not and I had problems. I reinstalled and everything works perfectly.
