Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Rebates for V4.5 Purchases

I was going to make my purchase this morning. Now after reading some of these posts, I don't think I'm going to move so quickly. I work for a large company and purchased my V4.5 5 seat upgrade online with my company credit card. I did this with full expectation to obtain V5 with my dollars spent on V4.5 credited right at time of order. This is what was promised! As Peter Langford said, "Since then the goal posts seem to have moved!" What's up with this? This rebate idea has costs, both for Alpha and the purchaser! My company and I have a real problem with a rebate check. I would like to hear why Alpha has taken this approach. It makes no sense as I see it right now!

      Bill,

They charged $4 for it being "foreign", even if it was specified in US Dollars and from an American Bank in Canada. If it was in another currency other than US Dollars, it was a charge something like $25 to exchange it to dollars!

Thus, Paypal, credit cards, International Money Orders and wire money transfers start to look good!

        RE: Rebates for V4.5 Purchases

You all need my two cents worth re: Rebate

I have a Database Application I wrote in Alpha DOS and Windows versions over the years for my own business. What I like about it is the fact that I can call up any transaction made with any customer in the past 15 years. These are searchable by name, address, phone number, invoice number, etc. Often I can do this while my customer is on the phone, nearly instantly.

If they were requesting a refund and If I told them to fill out a form; mail it to me; and then wait 4-6 weeks for it; I'd have the use of that money for that whole time! Man, that's a great idea - for ME.

I agree! I would still like someone to respond to Alpha's position on this and why I can't have my upgrade price reflected at the time of order.

I agree, I purchased the download version only 12 days ago, paid by credit card, I live and work in UK. I think that Alpha need to put in place a credit card refund. I do not mind filling in an extra form if it will save me waiting for a cheque and maybe having to pay to convert it to a local UK bank.

              Ken,

I'm sure that Alpha will refund to your credit card if you ask them and I'll bet it doesn't take anything like six weeks either. The people in their accounts dept seem very helpful and I, for one, can live with a card refund. It was the US check that would have been unacceptable.

Perhaps Alpha could respond to this thread and make it "official".

The rebate discusses everything but the amount of the rebate. If I just purchased 4.5 and unlimited runtime, what can I tell my client the net upgrrade costs will be to 5.0 ?

                  RE: Rebates for V4.5 Purchases

The rebate is for the amount that you originally spent to purchase version 4.5. Because this amount varies, the exact amount is not on the form. The net upgrade cost is whatever you are about to spend on version 5 minus whatever you spent on version 4.5

                    Larry,

                    Tell your client this:

They will be rebated the amount they paid for v4.5 and if they purchased v4.5 RT, that amount would be rebated as well.

                      RE: Rebates for V4.5 Purchases

Okay, I'm making it official. Alpha will process your rebate by whatever method you purchased V4.5. So if you paid by credit card, the refund will be applied to your card. If you paid by check, you will receive a check.

I'm very sorry for the confusion and inconvenience these rebates have caused. We need to use a rebate system because we don't have all of the customer information in our database that we need since not all customers buy directly from Alpha. Also, up until two months ago, our order entry system for on-line orders and phone orders was not integrated.

Rebates will not take as long as 4 weeks to be processed, however we do need a rebate form in order to apply the refund.

We'd certainly like to retain the support of all of our customers, so I hope this helps to clarify the issue and the reasons behind it.

                        Hello Peter

Do you know if the rebate is against version 4 plus 4.5 upgrade as this equals 4.5 full version.

                          Erica,
I'm planning on purchasing v5, but am unsure of which version of the runtime I am going to purchase. So here are a couple of questions based on that:
                          1. Can I purchase v5 now and receive the credit from my v4.5 purchase and then down the road purchase the v5 runtime that I decide upon and get the credit for the v4.5 runtime at that same time?
                          2. Also, if I purchase a v5 10 user runtime and decide later that I really needed a v5 20 user runtime, can I upgrade from the 10 user to the 20 user runtime by just paying the difference betweeen the 2 runtimes?

                          Thank you,
                          Van

                              All,
Just to add my two cents worth (thats one Cent US worth since Australian Cents are half US cents!!), I am pleased at the response of Alpha to the discussion and to recognise that there are some hurdles to cashing a US Cheque outside the US. I purchased the Full Version 4.5 and Unlimited Runtime versions on foot of the Rebate and I am too aware of the impact of both currency conversion (x 2) and bank charges.

I would not be considering changing from Alpha and I see the investment in Alpha as an investment in a toolset which will create revenue longer term. I am a bit dumbfounded at the lack of vision of some in relation to the pricing.... it costs twice as much in Australia since a dollar AU has the same purchasing power in AUS as a US dollar in USA..!!

So well done Alpha in your response to the real issue of the rebate mechanism...I think the price is well positioned generally - perhaps a price point of 5xRuntime would be a good and appropriate response also perhaps.. set at 75% of the 10xRuntime..

                              Best Regards
                              Tom OKeeffe

                                RE: Rebates for V4.5 Purchases

When I went online to order the upgrade to V5 I saw nothing on the website concerning a rebate. However, because I remembered that my purchase of V4.5 was supposed to be fully credited against my V5 purchase, I decided to call Alpha's 800 number, at which time I was told about the rebate.

Let's suppose the following. Since I originally ordered V4.5 in March, 2001, it is completely conceivable that I could have forgotten that my upgrade price was supposed to be credited against my V5 purchase. Were that the case, I might have ordered the upgrade at $299, and never applied for the $129 rebate. I think it more than likely that this has occurred and will continue to occur with at least some customers.

Either someone at Alpha was grossly negligent in not including the rebate information on the order page, or it's omission was intentional.

I suspect that the decision to dramatically raise the price of Alpha Five was made at the same time the company was offering to credit the V4.5 upgrade against the purchase of V5. Clearly, someone at Alpha must have figured out that #299 minus $129 = $170 (the effective upgrade price of V5). So, in effect, the V5 upgrade is more costly than the V4.5 upgrade price, AFTER the rebate. Not a bad deal for Alpha Software.

I upgraded this time, because of the $129 rebate. Next time I will think twice before forking over $299 to upgrade again. After all, I upgraded MS Access for only $99, and upgraded early to Adobe's InDesign 2.0 also for about $99 (later upgraders are paying $149). These are both well-known and highly regarded products, from companies "somewhat" better known than Alpha Software. In both cases, I might add, my shipping charges were less than the $8.00 charged by Alpha.

I like your product, and hope that V5 lives up to the hype I've seen. But, as I noted above, $299 is an exorbitant price to pay for an upgrade, and next time I will be somewhat more hesitant to do so (especially since there won't be a rebate to cushion the blow).

                                Respectfully,

                                Bernard Posner
