Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xbasic - Some type of ENUM function

    Greetings,

    Is there a function that will allow you to take a list like:

    to_do_list = ""%eol%
    item1
    item2
    item3
    item4
    ...
    %eol%

    and then pick off the items one by one out of variable just like the a5.table_enum() but out of a character variable?

    Thanx,
    Keith

    RE: Xbasic - Some type of ENUM function

    Keith,

    Try this:

    word(to_do_list,1,crlf()) will return item1
    word(to_do_list,2,crlf()) will return item2
    word(to_do_list,3,crlf()) will return item3

    and so on ....

      Hello Keith,

      Yes, take a look at the xdialog genies. Not sure what you mean by 'pick off', but here is an example in code:

      Code:
      to_do_list =
      item1
      item2
      item3
      item4
      ...
      %eol%

      ui_dlg_box("Pick List",
      [%M%.20,20vSelected^#to_do_list];

      %dlg%)

      Good luck,
      Jim

        ...
        %eol%

        ui_dlg_box("Pick List",""%dlg%

          Ok, one more time:

          Code:
          to_do_list =
          item1
          item2
          item3
          item4
          ...
          %eol%

          ui_dlg_box("Pick List",
          [%M%.20,20vSelected^#to_do_list];
          "OK"  "Cancel"

            RE: Xbasic - Some type of ENUM function

            Jim,

            What I need to do, is in XBasic I need to process this list in a while (or similar) loop going thru the entries in the "to_do" variable's list.

            I just can't use the *for_each() as it is, but that is the overall concept just the same.

            Regards,
            Keith

              RE: Xbasic - Some type of ENUM function

              Scott,

              I need to automate this via a loop of some sort and I do not want to do anything other than adjust the "to_do" list and have the code process the list whether it is 1 or 100 enties long.

                RE: Xbasic - Some type of ENUM function

                Keith,

                I am not sure how you want to get the list, but I will assume its from a table called "To_Do.dbf" for this example.

                First get your records from the table:

                To_Do_list = Table.external_record_content_get("To_Do","Item")

                Item is the name of the field in the To_Do table that holds the "Item1, Item2, ... ect"

                Now that we have the list, we find out how many items are in the list.

                kount = w_count(To_Do_list,crlf())

                Now create the loop:

                for i = 1 to kount
                cur_item = word(to_do_list,i,crlf())
                'Do whatever you need with the item
                next i

                So your code would look like this:

                To_Do_list = Table.external_record_content_get("To_Do","Item")
                kount = w_count(To_Do_list,crlf())
                for i = 1 to kount
                cur_item = word(to_do_list,i,crlf())
                'Do whatever you need with the item
                next i

                Hope this helps,

                Scott

                  Scott,

                  BINGO!

                  While I understood your original word() example I had no idea how to find out the number of valid entries.

                  w_count() now makes what you were promoting a viable option.

                  Thanx,

                    If *for_each won't work for you, how about for each...next?

                    for each item in to_do_list
                    #? "Dont forget to do " + item
                    #next item
                    Dont forget to do item1
                    Dont forget to do item2
                    Dont forget to do item3
                    Dont forget to do item4

                      Lenny,

                      Thanx for the tip, looked it over and decided that I am going to use this construct as it reads very clean in the code.

                      Thanx,
