Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How To Refresh Embedded Browse

    There has been a lot written about refreshing an embedded browse, when data has been modified or added externally.

    I have seen a lot of suggestions and what I beleive are fairly convoluted methods of doing this. As this is something I need to do regularly I have devised a function to do this

    Refer attached function (to place in your user defined functions - Code Tab)

    The function is called as follows

    Refresh_Browse ({BrwseName},{Table Name"},[{ActivateFlag}])

    For example say in code you has just added some data to the invoice transaction table "invtran" using code and now want this data displayed in the Browse "Browse1" , Just call function as follows:

    Refresh_Browse ("BROWSE1","INVTRAN")

    Refer to Code for comments on how this works

    I would appreciate any feedback before I add to Code Archive (Thanks Tom, in anticipation)

    Enjoy,

    RE: How To Refresh Embedded Browse

    Hello Mike,

    Thanks for the function. I appreciate all your work.

    I've tried similar approaches in the past, getting the current linking key and sort order and trying to do a new query to force the refresh. I didn't feel that it was a sucessful approach. I figured that Alpha in the context of a parent-child set relationship over rode what I was trying to do. I'm wondering if you have tested it when a sort order has been defined for the child table in the set definitions? This is where I've seen the most issues.

    Code:
    '*** Force new query on Browse ****
    	query.filter=""
    	query.options="M"
    	query.order=""
    	idx=tPtr.query_create()
    	evaluate_template("topparent:Tables:" + BrowseTable + ".filter_expression=idx.filter_get()")
    	evaluate_template("topparent:Tables:" + BrowseTable + ".order_expression=idx.order_get()")
    	evaluate_template("topparent:Tables:" + BrowseTable + ".query()")
    It would appear here that you are not taking into consideration the potential of a sort order on the child table. You appear to be querying the constrained child table, then doing another query via the layout. Curious if this 'double' approach forces the issue.

    Thanks,
    Jim

      For some reason my comments got truncated ........... maybe that should tell me something :-)

      What I tried to say:

        RE: How To Refresh Embedded Browse

        Hi Jim,

        I am setting the filter & order to the existing values, so I do not believe it is influenced by the order selected for the child (since it is preserved) .

        At least I have not had this problem yet - but the function is new - Thats why it's here and not in the code forum yet.
