Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Add text to existing field

    Hi all
Simple question (I think): How do I add a suffix to (modify) multiple existing field values quickly?
What I want to do is this: I have several inventory tables from different suppliers that I want to append into one table (our inventory table). The problem is that some of our suppliers have identical part numbers for their stock. As I'm using the part number as my primary key, each one has to be unique. So I want to add a suffix to each part number that corresponds to it's supplier (I hope I'm being clear here).
So how do I add text to 10000 odd different fields without replacing the old value? For example, Part Number "0001" supplied by "ABC Tools" would need to become "0001 ABC", while Part Number "0001" supplied by "XYZ Tools" would need to become "0001 XYZ", and so forth for the entire table. The table contains fields called "Part Number" and "Supplier" so the information is there, I just need a way to save me manually entering the suffixes for 10000 records...
    HELP?!
    Thanks
    Angie

RE: Add text to existing field

    Angie,

    I'd tackle it this way:

    a) make two good backups. (table wide operations can destroy data very quickly and irretrievably when Alpha does what I tell it to do, but not what I intended for it to do.)

    b) copy your database to a new "practice" folder. One where you can experiment and then later discard it completely.

    c) Check the field width for your Part Number field. Verify it's wide enough to hold both the numeric digits and the supplier abbreviation.

    d) Define an update operation for a single supplier's inventory table and use the genie to define an expression describing the new Part Number field value like this:

    alltrim(Part Number) + Left(supplier,3)
    "00023ABC"

If you assign part numbers using an autoincrement field rule you may have to turn it off in order to run the update operation. And you probably don't want to do it the way you're thinking. Probably better to do it the other way around so the numeric portion of the part number trails the supplier initials.

    left(supplier,3) + alltrim(part number)
    "ABC00023"

      Angie,

Just to add a note to Tom's excellent suggestion.

Make sure that no two Suppliers have the same first 3 letters in their name.

        Legend!
Thanks so much Tom, it worked perfectly. I was on the right track when I was playing with it yesterday, I just needed someone who knew what they were talking about :).
You've saved me so much time and worry, thanks again.
