Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using Conditional Objects

    Can someone help me?

I am desiging an application to smooth over the record keeping process in a small college. For now the structure is fine, however I am not familer with conditional objects.

I have played around with them for 2 days now and can get the conditions right. But how do I create an approprate event for say a 2 state button that when triggered the object evaluates the proper variable smoothly?

    RE: Using Conditional Objects

A two state button would have the choices

    Checkbox true value
    Checkbox false value

The conditional object would react to the value thus set.
    There can be only one.

You may have to trigger a screen refresh like the attachment.

your example works fine. I used the same syntax in my ONchange code however for some reason i keep getting 'argument is incorrect data type' i tried changing data types though, and im sure that i screwed this up somehow

            RE: Using Conditional Objects

The syntax is object specific. The general version would be

            formname:conditionalobjectname.refresh()

conditionalobjectname is revealed by looking at the conditional object object name in the form's design mode.
            There can be only one.

i wish to thank you for your example it worked, however when i attempted apply the code to my twostate button it still exclaims wrong data type. Is there any solution to this? i have yet to find one. I would be willing to post in zip form what i have so far, if anyone has time

                  RE: Using Conditional Objects

James, usually a conditional object is based on a form field object. Say you have a field called "Client Type", with possible values being Regular, France, Germany, etc.

and you create a conditional object for that field, and for each Country you have different fields in the conditioanl object. The condition will automatically update when you change the field status from France to Germany, etc.

By all means, post if you can. You would get a reply -- sometimes several and learn a great deal. When you post, be sure to explain how to create the error or problem and what you want to achieve.

                      RE: Using Conditional Objects

I have an article about conditional objects at my web site (yes, it's in dire need of improvement ... one day now soon ...). And while the article is a bit old and some of the interface looks a bit different now, it might still be helpful.

                      Anyway, see:

                        RE: Using Conditional Objects

The basic idea of this application is to simplify the record keeping of the school, its not finished.

To incurr the error open the form named 'transcript',then select the transcript tab. There is a button labeled Show Grades, press it. Theroreticaly, the ONCHANGE function should invoke the refreshing of the variables that the conditional object pulls from.

Thats how i think it should work, however when the button is pressed an error msg is produced stating that the script is of the wrong datatype. Why it does this I do not know.

If anyone can either show me how to fix this or maybe send me a fixed copy in a zip, it would be much appreaciated. Many thanks for the help given so far and for any future help

                          RE: Using Conditional Objects

                          Here you go.

The condition expression(s) in the conditional object were incorrectly configured.

                          Var-"Grades is defined as Logical.

You used this as the co expression:

                          Var-"Grades = T

This results in a variable type mismatch error. Alpha thinks "T" is the name of another object.

                          Should be

                          Var-"Grades = .T.

using the normal syntax to tell Alpha to activate this layer of the CO if Grades holds a value of TRUE.

I added the second layer for you.

                          Var-"Grades = .F.

You omitted it by mistake, perhaps.

Unzip the attachment to an empty folder. Holler if you have questions.
