Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

select newly added record in browse

I have read many postings on embedded browses and forms, yet have not found the answer to my dilemma. I am using an xdialog form to add a record. When I return to the main form, I would like to have the newly-added record as the active record.

The browse refresh is not a problem...the new record is in the list and positioned according to my index. I suspect there may be some way to do this using fetch.

Is their any wisdom a veteran could share with a rookie?

Wow, I cant answer your question, but I just posted the exact question a little while ago. The one entitled "Inserting a record into a grid/browse". How funny is that.

Hopefully we can get an answer.

You could continue the xbasic to include a fetch_last() (look for this in help file) when focus returns to form, or is it not the last file due to your index? this would be a different matter

        Lance,
Yes that is correct - it is not the last record due to the index which is alphabetical based on company name.

One approach is to set the form's filter and order expressions so that your new record appears first.

Another approach would be as follows. When you add the record, read the record number or a unique key value associated with the record (assuming you have one), and save that into a global variable. When you open the form, use a button that reads this variable and reads the appropriate record.

I really like the second approach and would like to learn more about that concept.

Yes I do have a unique key ID that I could read and put into a global variable. I am able to read a global variable, but I am not clear on how to make the appropriate record have focus. What mechanics would I use on the button? Could it be set up to run automatically, perhaps through an On Activate event for the form?

RE: select newly added record in browse

I have tried this and every other way I can think of and can not get a newly added record in a browse to accept focus. I used the record number as you suggested. Surely there has to be a way to move the focus to a record in a browse via xbasic.

              What am I missing

                Finally figured it out....

Adding these lines did what I needed it to. Recno holds the record number of the newly added record. tbl points to the child table.

                browse1.activate()
                tbl.fetch_goto(Recno)
                browse1.resync

                Yippe

Way to go! Jason, where did you add those lines. Did you put them in the save button on the add new item xdialog/form, or in the On Activate of the main form, or elsewhere?

                    RE: Finally figured it out....

Not so fast. It seems it works sometimes and other times it does not work. Alpha is so quirky sometimes. If I open a record and go to the browse and click the button that will insert a blank record in the browse it does not work right. It adds the record, but does not give focus to the new record just added. But if I click the button again, it works like it is suppose to. Maybe you will have better luck.

And to answer your question, yes, this is done from a button on the form. The script attached to the button inserts a new blank record into any position in the browse. The user highlights a row on the browse, clicks the insert button on the form and a blank record gets inserted at the spot above the highlighted record. Then its suppose to bring focus to the newly entered blank record will the user can fill it with information. However, it only works under the right conditions. I will have to play with it some more and see if I can get some consistent behavior from it.
