Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sources for Combo Boxes

I am new to Alpha 5, and I know that this is probably a simple problem, but I am struggling with it. I have a form with two combo boxes. Both are linked to the same table "Equipment". One is linked to the field "Nomenclature" the other is linked to a field called "ModelNumber".

Presently, the source for these two combo boxes are the tables "Nomenclatures" and "ModelNumbers". They are a one-to-many set where "Nomenclatures" is primary, the one, and "ModelNumbers" is the many.

I would like the users to be able to select a nomenclature from Nomenclature table, return the value to the Equipment table and then when the ModelNumber combo is selected, only those records to the selected Nomenclature are available for selection.

Like I said, this is probably simple, but I sure could use some help. Thanks!

I have just been through all of this myself. You need to do what is called a table lookup. There are some application notes on it in the help files or on the alphasoftware website. Do a search on Table Lookup.

See the file attached for the example database which goes with the application notes and shows a number of ways of doing what you want to do. Sorry I am not sure where I found the actual notes.

      Thanks Malcolm,

As far as the zip file, do the files nned to be extracted to a certain folder in order to open them?

I was able to get the table lookup to work! Thanks for the idea. I'd like to take a look at the examples to see if any improvements could be made.

Extract the zip file to a temp folder or any location you like then open the file "Table_Lookups.adb" in Alpha 5.

You realy do need the application notes to explain the subtle differences in the methods used to produce them, Pros and Cons etc.
        Good luck

          RE: Sources for Combo Boxes

          Malcolm,

Thanks for the info! I extracted the files and was able to open the Table_Lookups.adb, but I get a message "Failed to Save Document!" before it opens and when I click "OK" I can see the files in the A5 control panel, but the icons preceding each file are "greyed out" and I can't open them. Any thoughts? I haven't activated my copy of A5 yet, but somehow I don't think that is the problem.

          Thanks!

            Kevin,

Correct me if I am wrong but it diesn't seem like you have extracted the files correctly.

-Make yourself a "Temp" folder under in your "My Documents" Folder.
-Open the Table lookups zip file with win zip.
-Click the extract button in winzip. Winzip will then prompt you for a location to extract to.

-Enter the Temp directory location in the "Extract to" box
            and press extract.

            -close winzip

-Open Alpha 5 and open "Table_Lookups.adb" from in the Temp directory.

I have just repeated this hear and it works. I also did what I think you have done (tried to open the Table_Lookups.adb file from within winzip) and it opened up with the same simptoms.

            Regards,

            Malcolm
