Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Odd Behavoir Adding New Records

Hi - A strange recurring problem is being exhibitted when I try to add data using either the default browse for the set or the form that I created. I have attached the files as it is somewhat hard to explain.

The set includes information on films being played, the location where they are being shown and daily film schedules for a particular film at a particular location. Sometimes (although not always) when I try to add the daily schedules Alpha 5 just stops taking the data. You can add the data -- but when you either tab to the end of the data entry or manually add a new record the record being added vanishes -- you are back at that record again but no matter how many times you enter it (including if you close everything and re-open the files again) it will not really be added.

Obviously I have set something up incorrectly but I can't see what it is.

    Thanks for your help!

    Terri,

I can confirm the app is behaving the way you describe.

I'm not too sure if you have built the set with the correct logic of how you want the app to work.

Why have you got the same browse on the form twice?

What is the reason for choosing Referential Integrity for the Theatre Information? Will you want to delete the theatre information if the film schedule is cancelled.

If a theatre can show many films and each film can be show many times then I would have thought it would be best to build your set that way.

Also as the theatre is the only constant that could be refered to by a lookup on the Showtime Data Entry form.

Try rebuilding your set with a header table and in a different order and see what results you get then.

RE: Odd Behavoir Adding New Records

      Hi Keith - thanks.
The form is not correct but I wanted to fix this problem before I remade the data entry form (I originally created it using the Genie and that was what I got -- I was advised to recreate manually which I will do but then this issue came up and I figured I had better correct this first). The same issue also occurs when I use the default form so I don't think it is form related.

Took off the referential integrity -- my thought was that the person entering the data could not make any changes to the theater ID - I can just do that with the form so no need for that. Didn't change anything though.

There are really two contstants 1) The Theater and 2) The movies themselves. The film schedule is variable both by theater and by movie. A movie can have many different schedule playing at different theaters or at the same theater (ie: a film on two or more screens -- different schedule on each screen or changes to the schedule on different days of the week, etc.)

What I was trying to do is only enter the Film Information once for each new film added and then be able to have the various schedules apply to the location where the film is playing. If you have any suggestions as to set up they will be greatly appreciated.

Also - as you may have guessed - I am very new at this. I tried to look up Header Table in the help but couldn't find it. Could you explain this to me and I will experiment with rebuilding as you suggested.

Thank you again - your help is really appreciated.

        Terri,

When I refered to the header table, I should have called it the Parent table. If you have a look at Alphasports you will see what I am talking about.

In your own words you start with the movie as the parent table which is Linked 1:M Schedules. The schedules would do the Lookup to each theatre. Also check over your field rules I'm sure that is where your problem lays.

Any way I have played with your app and it seems to be OK now.
