Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Possible to build static web pages on my desktop?

    Moving from A4 to A5 v.1.x and then finally to V6 this week, I really have a lot of catching up to do.
    Reading through the website leaves me puzzled regarding the creation of web pages. I simply can't put $600.00 into the WAS so publishing a db on the web is out of the question.
    Before I spend an hour or two finding out for myself by playing around with V6 (and a search on the forum didn't help any with answering my question) is it possible to build static web pages with V6 on my desktop that I can then ftp to my site? I gather the answer is no but I'm obviously not sure.
    For instance, a db with 100 records would build 100 static .htm pages for uploading. Then I wouldn't need the WAS since they would be just plain 'ol .htm pages. (Hopefully with some kind of naviagation system linking them together.) I'd lose much of the advantage of publishing a database but at least I'd have 100 pages with content from the db.
    Possible?

    You can use Alpha's file methods to write almost anything to file. The "file".write_line() example illustrates.

    dim tbl as P
    tbl = table.open("c:\a5\a_sports\customer.dbf")
    file_pointer = file.create("c:\a5\output.txt", FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)
    tbl.fetch_first()
    while .NOT. tbl.fetch_eof()
    file_pointer.write_line(tbl.first_name - " " + tbl.last_name)
    tbl.fetch_next()
    end while
    file_pointer.flush()
    file_pointer.close()

    The file.create() method can create a file with any extension you like.

    It might be tedious to construct but you could use these to write data from a table to a .htm file.
    There can be only one.

      Keep in mind that A5 version 6 and version 7 provide a "local" web server for you to build and test real WAS-developed pages. So you can do all the building and testing you want without having to buy the server license.

      Then, if you have something you want to distibute across the web, you'll need to utilize a web server license. It can be your own license or you can "rent" a share of someone else's. There are two good companies offering space on their Alpha Web Servers right now, and I suspect more ISPs will eventually offer the service too. That way you don't have to lay out $600 right away, just the monthly fee.

      Finally, keep in mind that there's a message section on the phorum here for the Web App Server, so put your messages in the right place.

      You're right - you have a lot of catching up to to. Some of it will be painful, but once you "get it" you'll wonder why you took so long to make the jump.
