Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Word to the wise..Optional is not optional

I just feel it's necessary to highlight this point:
If a function has optional parameters, let's say:

    funciotn(table as c, key as c, [filter as c], [order as c])

You might read that as meaning, if you wish to add a filter, you can but you do not have to, same goes for order.

But that's not so, if you choose to add order but not filter, alpha will interpret that as the filter option (the preceding optional parameter) and it won't work.

Watch the optionals hierarchy. If you enter the second optional, YOU HAVE TO, enter all preceding ones.

I hope I am correct on this. It is not outlined in the help file. It's something I am finding by trial and error.

    Gabe,

I'm not 100% on this but if you want to use the second Optional only then there should be a second commer.

Your function would then read as: function(table as c, key as c, ,[order as c])

You can check the correct syntax by converting the code to open a form that has Order perameters only.

RE: Word to the wise..Optional is not optional

This has not been my experience.

If the function were declared like this:

      function(table as c, key as c, [filter as c], [order as c])

I'd use a comma as placeholder to tell Alpha that I was supplying an Order parameter, not a filter parameter.

      function("Customer",vc_MyKey,,"Lastname")

In other contexts Alpha will correctly identify "Lastname" as an Order and not as a Filter. Is this not working for you here?

In contrast, if you do this:

      function("Customer,vc_Mkey,"Lastname")

Alpha will interpret Lastname as a Filter parameter and probably choke.

        No.
That won't work. I already tried that.

          Ditto my reply to Keith.
I tried function(table, key,,order). It does not work.

Check Steve's explanation in the other thread. It seems your example here is different from the syntax used for the function you're working with. -- tom

              Gabe,

Can you give an example of a function whose syntax is:

              function(table as c, key as c, [filter as c], [order as c])

              and not

              function(table as c, key as c, [filter as c, [order as c]])

              ?

As I replied in the other thread, you make a good point. I guess one has to pay attention to these nestings.

To my knowledge, there are no languages in existence that allow you to arbitrarily specify some random optional parameter without specifying the parameters preceeding it. That wouldn't make any sense, as the computer would have no way of identifying which parameter you *actually* meant, especially if they are all similarly typed.
