Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Online App Activation

    Hi all,

I have some applications that are rented out on a monthly basis. At this stage my Clients have to phone in for the activation code.

Is anyone using a online activation code or something similar?

Would something like this be possible with alpha?

    Thanks
    Walter

    RE: Online App Activation

I'm not doing it yet but I believe it can be done through PayPay if your customers want to use that as a payment method. It looks as though PayPal can notify you but you need some type of app to read what they send you and respond accordingly.

I haven't actually set it up yet but I've been thinking about doing that to get out the registration numbers for the apps I'm selling on my website. It would help a lot for those times when I'm out of town for some reason.

      RE: Online App Activation

      Hello Cal,

What I was thinking on how to set up someting like this, is to have a registration app that generate a encrypted .csv file(or something) that would upload to my website as soon as the payment was received. Then the Client app would download the file and append the values into his registration table.
This is manual, but at least better than to phone in and get the registration code over the phone. It will be much quicker.

If I can get a way to download that file, save it in a folder, All this done "behind the scenes" , then I will be OK.

To get the file, append the values and delete the file is no problem.

At this stage I got sys_resolve_url() and it opens a txt or csv, and ask to save a .exe file. But the user can see what is going on.

Do you know of something like this that can work?

Seems to me like the version 7 Web App Server would be great for this. You can process a credit card with version 7, and manage all the other stuff you need too. I want one... may have to build one...

I plan on my app checking my web site for valid dates, the only call to me should be for payment and initial registration #. When I have received payment I'll update and upload with their expiration date. Of course if internet access is not available the app will not work. My app is internet driven so if you can't reach the web it won't work anyhow.

            Hello John,

            There are 2 options.
            1. Default - Internet activation
            2. "Manual activation" if the webserver is down or something, then the Client may phone you for the activation.

You do not know of a way to "silently" download and save a file from Alpha to the Client pc??

In your case, if the app is internet driven , well yes, no access in any case.

                RE: Online App Activation

Hi Walter. I think I have an answer. I do this with my applications. I have a full purchase done thru my website and PayPal. They purchase thru paypal then it redirects them to my "transaction" Page. There they can give me their info, (I use RCheck from Jerry Brightbill Jerry's Email )
They insert their security code on this form. It is then sent to my email. I generate an activation code and email it to them, or by phone.
It works perfectly! Or atleast for my business it does.
Another option is "ExeShield" at ExeShield
It will generate a time limited protection that will allow them to use your software for a specified time you specify, or a full unlock. It locks the Alpha Runtime so as to encrypt it and make it have to be purchased after a time or upon starting the first time in the case of monthly subscriptions. It is not as good with Alpha as it is with others, so I would recommend getting with Jerry.

                    Kevin,

""""It locks the Alpha Runtime so as to encrypt it and make it have to be purchased after a time or upon starting the first time in the case of monthly subscriptions. """"

Note that A5 runtime can be free, if an Alpha developer chooses to send it along with his or her program.

In fact, many 'Alpha Five demos' have the runtime ncluded, so I wouldn't rely on encrypting the run-time as a way to control usage of your program.

                    HTH,

                      Hi all,

Selwyn came to the rescue on this one.
Use the http_download() function ! Just read more in the help files if you need to download a file, like in my case.
