Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Alpha Five V7 Beta is Now Available

I downloaded the beta last night to play with it a little. I know this is a beta version, but it seems extremely slow to load. Seems the loading time gets longer with each new version.

Also, it seems that most of the new features additions and improvements are web related. Dont forget about us non web guys. All I seem to create are single user desktop applications....maybe I am in the minority here.

      Thanks,
      Jason

RE: Alpha Five V7 Beta is Now Available

Yes, Alpha has put tremendous effort into the web side of things. AND - apparently they are reaping BIG dividends in sales accordingly. Alpha did the right thing by moving aggressively on the web, and they delivered a stellar web database product. One can't fault them for that.

But you are right. Us desktop guys don't get much in the mean time. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do about it. Someday, maybe in a year (if we're really lucky), well get something too. In the interim, we'll have to use what we have and make the best of it. C'est la vie!

I agree. I guess that internet thing is pretty big :)

I was sorta hoping for a new grid at the very least. Oh well, V6 is doing a great job anyways so I guess I can wait longer :(

              that bug has been fixed.

it only happens once each day when the "News" tab is the initial tab on the Welcome screen.

you can safely ignore the error in the mean time. it won't happen again until tomorrow morning.

                Aaron,

I used an existing form because I came up with error as in original message and could not create new form. Therefor i used an existing form to try and utilise the chart Active X control on that but when I tried to select the active X control required to create the simple chart it was not available for selection as if the download did not include the simple chart Active X control.

                  Beta Product Fails to Load

I downloaded V7 with the following results. WHen I load the application, after selecting the eval option, the splashscreen comes up, the progress bar loads fully then, if I am not on-line, Alpha seems to invoke the dial up connector. When I cancel that, I get the following error message: Unhandled Exception. Alpha5 will do a forced termination. I am running WIndows 2000 SP4

Any ideas? ALpha5 v6 runs fine.

Beta not loading - more info

When I try to start the program, it does try to dial out. When I cancelled the dial up the attached message was produced. I may try to download the entire package again.

                        Am I missing something?
I thought that from articles I had read that V7 was going to be Alpha's entry into client server

The V7 beta has no client server functionality that I can see. Also, I note that the improvements to desktop development (ie: list view) are xdialog based. I would have thought that given the current emphasis of "Build databases without programming" that a visual control would have been more beneficial.

On a positive note - I was having problems in needing to use xbasic_synchronous when updating object in V6. This seems to be less of a problem in Alpha 7.

                          I agree also.

Who needs to do web stuff anyway, don't want my compeditors soaking off info from a web database.

If I password protect then potential customers need info to access I think that is catch 22!

Come on you alpha guys dont forget your roots. The only new things I have found are pdf items and a couple of xdialog routines.

Those pretty web grid components would be great for the desktop.

                            Update:

If I wait a few minutes while the dial connection is showing eventually I get the following error message see attached but I can at least get into Alpha v7. The problem appears to have to do with a startup html not getting focus. Is this something I can adjust on my pc? Thanks,

                            Steve
