Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mileage Calculation Help .....

    I have a Daily Police Log that has a field for Starting Mileage & Ending Mileage, and each day the officer enters both fields. At the end of the month, a "monthly report" shows the Starting Mileage at the Beginning of the Month, and the Ending Mileage at the End of the Month. (Basically the first and last days for a particular vehicle.)

    The problem is that many times an officer will be on his day off on the first day of the month, and unless he enters his STARTING Mileage on the "off" day, nothing shows up on the Monthly Report. (I currently have the field to show the Minimum Value, and if the officer is off on the 1st of the month, the minimum value is "0.")

    What I would like to do is create a calculation on the Monthly Report that takes the Starting Mileage Field and looks for the minimum value OVER "0." That way if the officer is off on July 1st, but works July 2nd, and his starting mileage on the 2nd is 11,200, his starting mileage for the Monthly Report will show up as 11,200, even though his mileage on the 1st was "0."

    The Ending Mileage is not a problem, as I currently have it set to show the "maximum" value for the period.

    If someone could give me the expression for the calculation I'm looking for, it would be appreciated.

    RE: Mileage Calculation Help .....

    This one is easy. On your report, create a calculated field something like this:

    start = IF(strt_milef=0,9999999,strt_milef)

    This way, any "0" amounts will be converted to some number that is larger than any actual mileage value the user will enter. (Actually, I'd probably go with IF(strt_milef " 1,...) just in case of rounding issues.) It doesn't matter whether you actually show the field on the report as long as the calculation exists.

    In the footer, calculate and display the minimum for the calculated field, "start":
    minimum(calc->Start)

      Hmmm, I hope it was that easy. If the officer has the 1st off, then is there even an entry for that day??

        I bet you could get a dozen or so suggestions regarding your question but I think you are missing the forest for the trees, forgive my bluntness!

        wouldn't the ending milage for the previous month be the starting millage for the following month ??!!! Unless you want to account for donut runs at the end of the month !

          Cal there is no entry if the officer is off, but the WAS inserts a "0" as a default.

          Gabe no, the starting mileage is not normally the same as the ending mileage from the previous month, and here's why: The officers take their cars home with them, and that mileage is not included in the "starting" and "ending" mileage, which only refers to a particular shift. So when an officer enters his ending mileage on July 31st, and drives 25 miles to his house, his starting mileage on August 1st will be 50 miles more than his ending mileage.

          Keeping this in mind, the Starting & Ending Mileage on the Monthly Report is really pointless, since we don't calculate total miles from these two numbers, but it's required anyway.

            Richard:
            And if the officer took the first 2 weeks of July off for vacation, or sick leave, then you have the first two weeks without any entries.

            My suggestion is to use tablemin() and in the filter put: start_mileage=year(date_field)=2005.and.month(date_field)=7.and.start_mileage"0 that gives you the starting mileage for July 2005

              Yes but wouldn't I have to change the filter every month?

              My goal here is to simply capture the first mileage entry for the month, on whatever date that might be. This is why the "Minimum Value" works good, it's just that the pesky "0" gets in the way if the first day of the month is the officer's day off.

                No.
                start_mileage=year(date_field)=year(date()).and.month(date_field)=month(date()).and.start_mileage"0

                  Gabe above is you posted formula. I'm not sure what goes in the (date_field) section.

                  My current date field is called "Date." Is that what I should change this wording to? Example:

                  startmileage=year(date)=year(date()).and.month(date)=month(date()).and.startmileage"0
