Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Differences between Web App Server and Alpha Softw

We wish to make our database web-based utilizing SSL or a VPN connection for our remote users. What I would like to know is what capabilities are available via the Alpha SW that a user is not able to do when utilizing the Web Application Server?

For instance, one thing that my users do is upload file (scanned images) to a client's record. Would they still have the ability to do this, if setup correctly, in the WAS?

    Thank you,
    Trudi

The version 6 Web Application Server does not support file uploads, but version 7 will.

On a VPN, your desktop Alpha Five application will be considerably slower than using the Web Application Server to create a web-based application for your users.

The WAS doesn't support file uploads but A5v6 does support them through the FTP functions. If it's feasible for your users to have a copy of A5v6 on their computer then that can be used to upload files. (I'm guessing here that you don't want just anyone in the world uploading scanned images to your site.)

I do this in some of my apps where I want my client to be able to upload a backup file to me for analysis. They click a button which allows them to select the file to upload then uploads it to a pre-defined folder on my website. Since it's all hidden in the global script, they have no way to access the password. This means they are restricted to these uploads only and can't get to my site and change/download anything else even using another FTP program.

Of course, if they don't need a copy of A5v6 for anything else and you can wait for v7 (supposedly it's supposed to be released soon), that's the way to go.

        Cal,

Not that it's that important, but I believe a simple sniffing of the internet traffic on the computer running your code would expose the password and login and folder directory.

Not much risk, but a little bit for the most secure requirements.

Good point; and very likely true. However, for most of my users of this app, I have to talk them through the process of using Windows Explorer just to find a file - so it's not a big issue in my case. And, it's really convenient since some of the backup files are over 10 MB and a year or so ago they "upgraded" (my ISP's terminology) my e-mail from 40 MB to 10 MB.

While Cal's method works quite well, here's another way to do it without V7.

Email. V6's email processing capabilities could check a specific email address for messages in a format you define and then import the attachments to those messages. This way the user would not need to have a copy of Alpha Five on their computer.
