Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Do you want to save? Are you insecure?

Recently--like in the last month--every single time I close a form that I've opened in design mode, Alpha asks me if I want to save that form, whether I've changed anything or not. It's driving me nuts.

Sometimes I have to open up 5-6 forms in design mode for comparison purposes. Having to answer this question 5-6 times not only forces an extra click into an already klunky process, it forces me to =think= about whether or not I actually did change anything. Horror!*

I realize this may seem trivial, and I doubt someone can point me to an option that says, "Don't ask to save layouts that haven't been changed," but I needed to get it off my chest. :-)

    ---B

*The last program I worked with that asked extraneous save questions was WordPerfect. Every single time you saved a document, it would ask you if you wanted to overwrite the old copy. Like a lot of people, I quickly learned to ignore the question and hard-wire a "Yes" answer into my brain. Sure enough, I occasionally ended up overwriting a file I didn't mean to.

View menu, settings, system, layouts, has a layout preferences setting

Automatically save Form Layouts when switching....

If this is what you want it will save some clicks.
    There can be only one.

RE: Do you want to save? Are you insecure?

      Good lord, no.

Maybe I'm the only one who works this way, but I often make experimental changes to forms and am closing them precisely because I =don't= want to save the changes.

A5 already thwarts this approach because it kinda-sorta requires a form to be saved before using it in "view" mode. But this makes it doubly hard. A5 already makes it necessary to keep an external record to keep track of what functions/scripts you've changed or not changed, now it's necessary to keep an external record to keep track of what forms you've changed, since unless you've been meticulous about not-saving, every table you've opened a form for is going to have a falsely-late date according to the OS.

I agree with the Blake on the "save form" issue. It would be nice if A5 could tell when the form had actually been edited and not prompt if the form hadn't been changed.

For GLOBAL scripts and functions, there are two possibilities for checking what was recently changed....

        1. There is a setting ('on' by default??) that puts the user name and date/time stamp on each script whenever it is edited. From what I've seen, this seems to be pretty accurate. It shouldn't be too hard to create a routine to read those dates and display a list in descending date/time order.

        2. You can right click on the code tab and select "recent files". UNFORTUNATELY, this is only "most recently accessed" and does not take into account the last edit date.

Since the same date/time stamp is added to all the layout scripts (buttons, events, etc.), it should also be possible to get these but it could take a lot more time because each form has to be opened one at a time to check the scripts. I'll see about adding this capability to my AIMS App Analyzer. A normal run to check those scripts could take quite awhile because of all the other things being done at the same time. However, I might be able to come up with something much faster.

Thanks, Cal, that would be peachy.

Let me ask you this: Would it be possible to modify your program in such a way that the output could be fed into a CVS? This would make it easier to "version" an A5 app, and make it possible to both tightly control changes among multiple programmers without losing their work (because you missed something).

I guess I should rephrase that: I'm sure it's possible. I wonder what you'd consider the likelihood of such a thing."s"

What you are both saying is true. Which is why we need a new controlpanel and a new adb file that handles all of this along with proper date & time stamps among other features.

I'm not sure I understand what you want to put in the CSV file. Just the script name, date, and time? (And, if it's reasonable to get them, the form and object names for layout scripts?)

If you are talking about exporting the search results from the App Analyzer, the first step of the App Analyzer (the "documentation" step) creates a table that you can access. It has all the info re: table, layout, object, and script/expression text. The "search" functions in the App Analyzer simply automate the search process on that table. You could open the table, query it, and export it to any format you want. Other than that, the current format of the output (see example) doesn't lend itself to the CSV format.

Hmmmm. Acronym trouble, as Daffy Duck might say.

                Not CSV (Comma Sepatated Values).

                CVS (Concurrent Versioning System).

                  Oops. Sorry.

                  (A) I wasn't paying enough attention.
                  (B) Don't really know much about CVS. (Isn't that a drug store?)
