Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Multiple Column List box without getting focus

    Hi All,

I have a situation for a reservation systems (to take bookings) where I would like to have the user enter:
    a) the surname
    b) the Firstname

On the right I want a dynamic list showing surname, firstname & address of existing customers so the user can straight away if there are any matching names

After entering the surname the list should show people who have same surname

After entering the first name the list should narrows to only people with the matching firstname and surname.

    I have tried the following

    a) an embedded browse which I update on the onchange() method but the problem is that this changes my record on the left (obviously since it is listing the same active records)

    b) An embedded list box (from toolbox) - the problem with this is that it only displays one column . I dont believe I can control formating for tabs and column lines (as you can in Xdialog)

    c) An Xdialog Window with list box - This allow me to format the columns but it receives focus and I want focus to stay on the fields that are being types on the left of the screen (ie: Surname, firstname , address etc)

Can anyone give me a solution to this problem? - remember that I dont want focus to change from the fields being entered. The list box serves only as a visual aid to identical names.

RE: Multiple Column List box without getting focu

    Forget this

I got the record list working Ok
It seems that the record list box actually opens a seperate instance of the table, even though in the dialog it say "current_table".

I also worked out that I could used the standard list box and when I set to Use xbasic script it allows for standard xdialog formatting to be specified.

Funny how these things always seem to come to you straight after you give up and post a question

RE: Multiple Column List box without getting focu

It seems Im going circles on this one-" 3 posts to myself
Despite my 2nd post it does seem that the record list is attached to the same table instance as my main form , as when I refresh values the list box it seems to change the records on my main page.

So I am still stuck. I have tried using a standard list box (from the toolbar) and populate it with text (as per the Wizard). Then I do this it does not seem to take any owner draw string or populate from variable as I would expect if I were executing a script with xdialog. Perhaps there is something I am doing wrong here

Anyway any guidance would be appreciated

        Mike,

If you achieve this, I'd be very interested in seeing a working example.

Your specification resembles something we've come to know as a progressive lookup.

This article may give you some ideas:

        http://www.learn alpha.com/OnKey2/OnKey2.htm

There are two articles in the Newsletter archive also, search key "progressive".

These approaches place focus in the control that's displaying the search results. I know that's not the effect you're trying for, but maybe these will useful alternatives for you to consider.

I Will have a read and post my feedback
I did look at Newletter articles - while there are link to the progressive lookup they are dead ones.

I must say that I think this requirement is a fairly basic one and it does seem like a hole.

RE: Multiple Column List box without getting focu

Unless I'm missing your point, the following should work in an Xdialog

A text box (text) to enter your last name and first name
In the event_code you will need to trap the text_change event in the manner:

            If a_dlg_button="text_change" then
            a_dlg_button=""
            CreateList()
            End if

You need to create the "CreateList" function which will repetitively query the name table for the values entered and which will display the results in the list box for each aaggregate string each time a letter is entered in the text box.

You may need to play with the last - first name concatenation in the index to get the results you need.

            It's a progressive lookup and I'm pretty sure there's a sample somewhere.
