Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mismatched end of loop or if-block error message

    Whenever I press a button defined with a 'go to url' script I get the above error message. What does it mean?
    Also, is there a place to search for error messages and their causes on this site?
    Thanks

    RE: Mismatched end of loop or if-block error messa

    It means you have an IF without and END IF or a FOR without a NEXT or a WHILE without an END WHILE, etc, etc.

      Hit F4 in the script and it should tell you roughly where the problem is.

        Re: Mismatched end of loop or if-block error message

        I am getting ERROR: Mismatched end of loop or if-block
        I can't understand the error message as the code seems correct.
        Please help. Thanks.

        Here is the code.

        dim XX as P
        dim vvv as c

        xx=:Client Demographics:RESPSEX.THIS
        vvv=xx.value

        IF(vvv <> "M" .and. vvv <> "F")THEN
        ui_msg_box("x","Sex must be M or F")
        ELSE
        ?eval("vvv <>'M' .and. vvv <>'F'")
        END IF
        ERROR: Mismatched end of loop or if-block

        ?eval("vvv<>'M' .and. vvv<>'F'")
        = .T.

        ?vvv

          I don't think you can use ? in a script. Try

          ui_msg_box("Result",""+eval("vvv<>'M' .and. vvv<>'F'"))
          There can be only one.

            The issue is not "?" but the if-then-else loop. Here's the code without the "?". Same error messge:

            dim XX as P
            dim vvv as c

            xx=:Client Demographics:RESPSEX.THIS
            vvv=xx.value

            IF(vvv <> "M" .and. vvv <> "F")THEN
            ui_msg_box("x","Sex must be M or F")
            ELSE
            ui_msg_box("x","Sex must be M or F")
            END IF
            ERROR: Mismatched end of loop or if-block

            ?eval("vvv<>'M' .and. vvv<>'F'")
            = .T.

            ?vvv
            = "h"

              Actually you don't have an if-then-else loop.

              Separate

              IF(vvv <> "M" .and. vvv <> "F")THEN

              into

              IF (vvv <> "M" .and. vvv <> "F") THEN

              and you will.

                Stan,

                The two statements seem identical, am I missing something?

                Separate

                IF(vvv <> "M" .and. vvv <> "F")THEN

                into

                IF (vvv <> "M" .and. vvv <> "F") THEN

                  Steven,
                  You need spaces after the IF and before the THEN

                  Code:
                  IF (vvv <> "M" .and. vvv <> "F") THEN
                    [SIZE="2"][COLOR="Red"]^[/COLOR][/SIZE]                             [SIZE="2"][COLOR="Red"]^[/COLOR][/SIZE]
                  Don't even really need the THEN as it is implied.

                    The reason you need the space after the if is that there is an Alpha function

                    IF( Logical_Expression as L, True_Value as A, False_Value as A )

                    Without the space Alpha is interpreting your

                    IF ... THEN ... ELSE

                    as unmatched because there is no IF, only IF().

                    Apparently the unmatched error trumps the missing parameters error.

                      There are spaces in my code. Don't know why they don't show correctly as posted. Even with spaces, getting same message. Its making me batty!

                          It works for me when you remove the parenthases in the if statement.

                              Mike (and Stan), Thanks so much for taking the time to respond, and Mike for sending along the small database. I have however found something strange. While Mike's code runs fine, when copied and pasted into the Interactive Window, the same irksome error message occurs. Is there a bug in the Interactive Window or am I missing something. Code and error msg below:
