Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    a5v6 1600-2057 hangs at startup

I downloaded the 1600-2057 update, installed it, and Alpha comes up to the logo, clears to the grey screen and hangs. I go to the Win XP task manager which shows it's not running. I've tried the download three times (a5v6_full_patch.exe, 15929 kb) and multiple attempts to install, but the same results each time. Any suggestions?

I just ran across someone else having the same problem on his IBM ThinkPad but not on any other computer. What are the specs for the computer you are having trouble with?

Howard, I was the persoon you helped yesterday. I took my laptop off the docking station and A5V6 worked just fine. Our network is Novell Netware 6.5. I don't know if the problem is Novell-specific but it certainly relates to being on the network somehow. Another person posted a similar fix - unplugged the ethernet cable and it worked fine.

It's a fairly new Dell desktop with a Pentium 4 (2.8 Ghz) processor, 38G hard drive, 512M ram, running XP Pro version 2002, service pack 1.
Previous upgrades worked ok. I'll just have to wait for the next one and see what that does. Thanks for responding.

Roger, can you confirm that it does in fact hang as opposed to just pausing for a long time when you are connected to the docking station? I tried to duplicate your situation and Alpha Five did take significantly longer to load Welcome screen, but it did eventually load. I'm looking into the long delay now, but it would be nice to determine if it is the same problem you are encountering.

I am running Novell Netware. And it does cause a problem with my USB port. Netware uses drive F: which the USB port insists on using, so I have to manually reassign it to G: whenever I want to use my USB port. Probably not related, but who knows?

I just created a pre-release update for you to try. You can download it from http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/A5V6Download/system_aex.zip

Exit Alpha Five if it is running and extract the contents of the zip file to your A5v6 program folder. When you restart, the hang on startup should be gone.

RE: a5v6 1600-2057 hangs at startup

Sorry, not quite. With the 25 July patch (and a new $99 second license I just purchased), the alpha5.aex and system.aex are dated 11 July, and the logon hangs where the Alpha Five V6 logo's green progress bar zips to the end and a vertical gray bar cuts through the logo at the rightmost corner of the green cube. After installing the new zip file you created, the alpha5.aex and system.aex are dated 18 Aug, and it gets past the logo screen to a plain gray screen and hangs there. I tried it several times to make sure, but am always left on a plain gray screen.

can you attach the a5startup.log file.

it will show what a5 was trying to do when it hung.

Here's the startup log following the failure.

For anyone with this problem, I have been woprking with Gerald and he has confirmed that I fix we made yesterday siolves the problem.

This fix will be included in the next patch. However if you can't (or don't want to) wait for the next patch, you can download an interim update from http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/A5V6Download/system_aex.zip

Exit Alpha Five if it is running and extract the contents of the zip file to your A5v6 program folder. When you restart, the hang on startup should be gone.
